Volca Sample and click count in trouble

I'm using the MPC1000 hooked up to a Volca Sample. I'm not sending notes - I'm just using the onboard Volca sequencer. Pressing PLAY START starts the Volca off in sync with the rest of my equipment and STOP stops it no problem. But when I'm recording (other tracks, not the Volca), the Volca starts up just before the third beat of the four beat click count in, so at the minute I'm having to switch the count in off and wait for the sequence to play once before doing anything.

Does anybody have a solution?
I'm on the original Akai OS.

Everything is fine connection and trigger-wise EXCEPT for when I try to record using a click count in.
Then the volca doesn't start on the first beat of the sequence - for some reason it starts just before the third count in beat, before the sequence actually starts.

I need the volca to start when the sequence record starts. Mute wouldn't work, since it's starting out of sync during the count in. I'd have to stop the volca then start it again in the space of a beat, which would be very tricky.

To be honest, I'm not sure what's going on in MIDI. I don't know what kind of data could be being sent at that strange timing.
Come to think of it, I didn't even set a channel because volca triggers perfectly on PLAY. I'll try setting a channel to see if that fixes it.
