yeah, I thought that the new OS was to fix this, but I get the same deal, I have been meaning to reread the update text file.
Whats happening: the 16 levels only adjusts the selected parameter (tuning, decay, etc) the note number and note on/off messages are still just midi... a message for note on and a message for note off, if you are playing the 16 levels with two fingers you may be rolling to a new note on, just before you let off the previous pad...when you let off the first pad, the note off message cuts off your new note as well, pain in the azz!
no easy solution , what I do (for 16 level tuning ish) is to use the 16 levels to pick out my pitches and then assign more pads to play the sample at the different pitches I need. In my template program I have pad bank D set up pretuned chromatic-like. kinda prebuilt for a pitched sound...
I make a copy of the sample that I want to pitch around (so that it at the last sample in memory) and then just hit the pads in bank D while I spin the data wheel.. that way its pretty quick to get the sample assigned to all the pads in bank D.. somewhat like a rigged up Auto chromatic function...but way more ghetto...
I know its not fast or convienent, but it works, and doesn't take long once you've done it a bit.
for a sidenote, the store I work in recently got a 4000 in, and although it is going to be a pinch on my budget, Ive been bringin it home to get to know it ( to ...uhm help with sales..eheheh ) and christ, it puts an end to all the hassles, too bad its 3 times the price....and has more features than I need in my drum machine....but I think Im in love.
