Judging by your description, it sounds like your LCD assembly is getting pushed in a way that lifts some of the contact points from LCD screen to the board. You may be able to extend its life a bit by gliding a soldering iron over the contact points. I've done this to an old graphing calculator. I haven't seen what the assembly is like for the MPC, but I'd definitely try that as a last resort before getting a new LCD unit. Got nothing to lose if you think a replacement is the next step.

Could be something shorting on the back of the LCD panel to the frame.

Disassemble.

Disconnect ribbon cable from LCD display board.

Unscrew LCD display board from frame.

Reconnect ribbon cable.

Turn unit on while face plate is still removed, while LCD board is unscrewed from frame. Only ribbon cable connected. Make sure LCD is shielded from frame. (Set it on an envelope or piece of cardboard).

If everything works as it should, then screw LCD board back to frame. Leave face plate off.

Still good?

Then proceed to put face plate back on.

Report back and let us know if it worked, or at which step the lines came back.
