Hey - I'm new here - hope someone can help.

I'm currently playing live with an akai S3000xl sampler (with all the trimmings), and RM1x sequencer, an SH-101, a tiny little mixer and lots of effects boxes. Sometimes i take a guitar along too

Every time i play live it's kinda like moving house, and I am intrigued by the MPC1000 for this reason.

As far as I can see, it would improve:
1. portability - less kit to carry!
2. USB connectivity vs. awkward SCSI issues
3. More active memory than my s3000xl

however, the downsides might potentially be:
1. effects section - does it compete with the EB16 on the s3000xl?
2. the sequencer. I have never (gasp!) used an mpc, and i don't know whether the 1000 sequencer would compete with the intuitiveness and lovely hands on control of the RM1x.

Can anyone here compare the s3000xl with the MPC1000, or tell me a little bit more about the sequencer?

thanks in advance for any help.

I've never used an rm1x so I can't compare the two, but the mpc sequencer is great in my opinion.

I do have an s2000 though which is pretty similar to the 3000xl, and I can tell you that the mpc is a different kind of sampler. You can't do the same stuff so you couldn't use the mpc as a direct replacement for the s3kxl. The s series are like a synth sampler and the mpcs are like a drum machine sampler, if that makes sense. I have the eb16 on my s2000, the eb16 is a bit more serious an fx section than the mpc1k's built in fx.

You can download the mpc1000 manual (or you used to be able to, haven't checked recently) from the akai website if you want to check out how the sequencer works, that's probably easier than me trying to explain it all here.

Hope that helps.

I've sold my Rm1x!!!

It's a hell of a machine with a fuc king great great sequecer!
The mpc sequencer is much much more intuitive!

If you get yourself Mpc1000 forget step sequencing, you must sequence in real time, the step editor is just for corrections.

This is compensated by autoquantize and note repeat function.

Say goodbye to the wonderfull midi efects(I miss'em!) but say hello to a machine you can use without melting your brain!

And don't forget: if you don't sell your present gear you can use Mpc as a live sequencer.
Do you stuff and record all to Mpc sampler.

Peace, Trance, Spirit!

I agree about the S-series. Def. synths as much as samplers. The MPC is more than just a sampling drum machine, as the 1000 has ALOT of memory you can make KEYBOARD type programs, but it is a pain in the ass compared to the S-series. MPC is a GREAT dum machine and phrase sample AS WELL AS a great "hands-on" midi sequencer.

i 100% agree with 3lephant.

i also sold my rm1x because it was a bit of a brainache (for me).

i just want to add, with the mpc1000 forget all the "Job" functions of the rm1x.
foget the sections also.

anyway doing a live set is like moving house. but it is worth it. :)

thankyou all for your help.

Much appreciated.

i'm thinking i might give the 1000 a go if only for live use - and sample all of my non-drum parts as phrases.

thans again :D

best thing to do is go to a store and spend a few hours seeing if it fits your requirements.
