It wasn't a switch at all really. I thought I was done with beatmaking. I thought I let it go, but I just can't stay away. I've been really miserable with out an MPC. The only good thing I can say about being without gear...is that it allowed me to really enjoy music again.
As far as picking the 1k again.....my style of beats are simple. I wasn't using anything on the 4k that was beyond the capabilities of the 1k. I know this cause I've used both machines quite a bit. I just didn't see the point of keeping such a big ass expensive machine around when I can have a real small tight portable one that does the same shit for half the price.
And I like the 1k cause the only thing you gotta worry about upgrading is the RAM. Using CF cards is real handy, and I just felt more creative using the 1k. The 4k to me was a lot like using a pc....just too much options and crap. To many options that I never used. And I didn't like how clean and sterile everything sounded. You can dirty the sounds up and whatnot, but it's still not quite the same.
The 1k in my opinion isn't as punchy as the 4k, but it's sound is pretty chunky and warm, and having the mastering effects is nice. That's something the 4k doesn't have, and it was something I missed having when I switched last year.
The beats are my Crack habit son. I just can't get this monkey off my back no matter how much I try.
