I would like to get a machine, but don't know which one is better. Maybe there are other ones for under $1000? Is MPC 1000 a better sampler/sequencer for the price comparing it to roland sp 606. What about other samplers that work well without using a computer?

Check out some reviews of the 606, it's really quite limited in what it can do. Way less sample memory, tiny sequencer. It's selling point is its integration with Cakewalk software. I would say if you're already using Cakewalk and you want something to take your music out live it might be worth looking at from an ease of use point of view. For stand alone use it's the 1000 all the way.

Haven't time for full details but be warned, the SP606 is actually a very different concept from the MPC1000. The SP606's closest relation is the older SP808.

The main difference could be put like this; the SP606 is an "audio phrase sampler/sequencer" and the MPC1000 is a "sampler/MIDI sequencer".

So do as much research as you can and be sure you get the difference before you buy either.

Jim.

Well said! definately .. www.rolandus.com has a lot of information about the 606. i was thinking about getting this before getting my 1k but the one thing that steered me to make the decision with the 1k is simply the fact that this machine can do practically anything you want you just have to have the patience to freak it!! sorry i have played with the 606 and it just feels cheap i doesnt have the feel and the simple interface as the 1k. i suggest you spend the extra 3 or 4 bills to get a 1k who know you may even be able to get a used for cheaper. but it all comes down to what your confortable working with. so definately check your local music store before you break the bank. because 6 hundred and 1 thousand dollars are a lot of money to be spending. you want to be sure that you know what you are getting and that you will stick with your choice for a long while

Your asking the wrong question mate...you should askingya self
"WHAT do I NEED" what in detail do u want to do how and in what environment etc. after that u can look at a SP606 and see it if fits your requirements same with the MPC1000.

I say this because people look at other people make music and assume thats the way its done. find what works best for u. u might like the hands on approach and prefer using a PC for example.
