reason had been my production method of choice before i picked up the mpc. for about 6 or 7 months after buying my 1k, i switched entirely to my little blue and red love machine.

now, however, i have become overjoyed at the possibilities of separating my every song into two parts - one, the traditional hip hop elements (drum, sample, bass, etc). the 2nd is all reason. the electronica ish - synths, noises, plinks, pops. everything else. i love it. it gives a depth to your music you will seldom find other places. plus, the possibilities for interpolation are spectacular.

reason is sometimes unpleasant to use, especially the controllers. however, they provide a real nice element of flexibility and multifaceted beauty that is really desirable.

this is where midijoy comes in. it's a vst plugin i found in the course of my bootlegging. it allows a producer to connect a joystick to their machine and USE IT TO CONTROL CONTROLLERS IN REALTIME through vertical and horizontal movements. isn't that badass?? if you've ever messed with controllers in reason, you know the possibilities this opens up, particularly for live use.

i have not tried it yet, but once i do it will go onto my desk right next to my mpc. using the 1k to control reason was good already, but i'm finding that the more you can control this beautiful software program from external hardware, the better it gets. i plan to pick up an old joystick from Goodwill immediately.

here's something else to do, off subject but equally useful. if you are lucky enough to have 2 computers, dedicate 1 entirely to music. remove ALL other programs, including internet, etc. install only music programs and recording programs. allow your other machine to be your sole computing computer. the first is now a DAW -- a digital audio workstaiton. my DAW has 360 gigs, and even though its processor is not perfectly up to speed, it works with supreme speed because it's no longer bogged down with a whole bunch of non music buliish. give it a try.

just spreading the love. peace.
