Recording into the 1000

Okay here is what I want to do:

I got a turntable but no dj mixer so what if I get a dj mixer(one with the crossfader) and hook up the turntable to the mixer then into the mpc. That way i'll be able to eq a bit before the record goes into the mpc.

I assume I'm correct with that right?

Okay and also would i be able to get like a Shure m58 mic and hook that into the dj mixer so i could record vocals on the mpc. Does the dj mixer come with a mic preamp or would I have to get a seperate preamp for the mic?

yes using a dj mixer is the way most of us do it. you could also get a table with digital outs and then you wouldn't need the mixer but you wouldn't be able to pre-EQ.

i think it depends on what mixer you have, mine has 2 mic outs, vestax pmc-05proII but from page 4 in the 1000 manual it looks like you can hook a mic straight up to the 1K

Usually not. In fact the phono preamps are pretty crappy too. I've been to studios that use >1000 USD phono pre-amps alone. Some of the mic pre-amps are much more expensive than that. It's not to hard to put a "DJ mixer" to shame.

You can use a DJ mixer to record vinyl into you MPC but on the Mic side of things I'd recommend getting a small pre-amp(lifier). If your budget is tight I'd recommend something like the Samsom C-valve. Then you'll get a good clean level for recording.

If budget is a bit more flexible then go for a good Condenser Mic with a good pre-amp like one of the Focusrite range or above.
