Programming

Hello everyone, I was wondering how everyone else programs/trims their samples, does anyone recommend sample cd's? It takes me about an hour just to load and chop samples from one song, I was wondering if there was anything that could be done to speed up the process. Cuz im the type of the producer that has a whole beat in my head but by the time I finish programing everything, It seems harder for me to translate it.

Also do you all approach beats in the same way with having everything in your head, or do you load samples and then see what you can make out of them? Am I the only one that spends more time sampling and programming than making the actual beat?

Look mate don't take offence to this but this stuff is worse than people who haven't read the manual. I understand you just wanna make the best choons you can but serious, you need to learn your own way of working. When good music was underground people didnt have these forums, they learnt themselves. Fair enough their mates tort em and you might not know anyone in to this, and I'm not knockin you, just saying Xperiment.

If it takes an hour thats 10 hours less than it would have taken 10 years ago to do the same shit multitraking to tape or whatever, nawhatImean?

You are obviously amateur. Like me. Nothing to be ashamed of, just practice harder, and buy a record player if you haven't got one and 10 50 cent records (that's 10 records that cost fifty cents by the way) drop the needle randomly on the and chop that up.

Oh, and if you're gonna BUY samples, get em of Tutor (see the banners at the top of the page)

Sound Advice Acid. I would buy a turntable, go to a second hand record shop (Oxfam Music is my favorute), yard sale or something and just buy the most OBSCURE records and I'm tellin you, you WILL find samples from these records that will inspire you to chop up and make a beat from them. Easy listening, classical, jazz, soul, gospel, sci-fi, rock, it doesnt matter. Youre bound to find a diamond in the ruff somewhere.

i'm a newfound advocate of buying shit records, really obscure weird ones and finding raw gold on them. i chop my samples to oblivion and back so they're absolutely unrecognizeable....which means i cant get sued....

I agree with the basic philosophy of people who replied...

But personally I think its fine to buy sample CD's for single-hit sounds and stuff that you know you want.

Like if I bought a sample CD of different hits on the Minimoog or something, what's wrong with that, its part of what samplers are for.

And actually, using single hits and making your own d** melodies is just as creative as ripping off a 2 bar loop from a jazz record and using it verbatim I would say. (Not that you all do that; just an example.)

I would suggest imagining your beat once you have a program made. Learn when and where your creativity integrates best with your production proccess.

Yeah that's an interesting point. I bet _everyone_ has these type of frustrations when they start trying to do some art.

Electronic music is only partly "manifesting what's in your head". The other part is "going with the flow" and "working with what you got". Of course, once you create a package of sounds, tools and techniques, you will start to imagine what you could do with them; so your imagination comes closer to the reality. So its almost like your imagination and your capabilities meet in the middle.

Every art form has an aspect of that- in fact sometimes when I try a different art form that I'm not so attached to, I get good results cause I don't have as many expectation. Like I tried painting with acrylic paints and I just started at random and got some cool shapes and stuff, and just went with it.

Yeah, for sure... I knew I was coming at it with a slightly different angle then what other people maybe meant, because, there's "sampling" and then there's "sampling" , u know?
