-yes you still need midi

-there was a thread not too long ago where someone said he tried and got way better sound

-how much better... depends on the quality of your recording gear's a/d convertors.

-but since people say the mpc's d/a convertors have 'good personality' maybe u will miss out on that!

I use the spdif in / out hooked up to my PC sound card and then route the MPC out to my DJ mixer and / or PC through the sound card. I've never tried using the analogue in and outs, so I can't compare the sound quality, but I can certainly say that it makes for a very clean mixdown when you record the MPC direct to the hard drive on the PC. It's also good if you want to use your MPC in conjuction with some software (I generally slave ableton live's midi clock to the MPC and do the beats on the box and the loops on the PC).

The only slightly complicated thing I've had to do is to remember to sync the sample clock on the PC card to the MPC before I switch it on, otherwise you tend to get a nasty crackly mess of a sound when the two sample clocks conflict with each other.

i get really great results with spdif. clean, crispy sound. it really brings out the personality of 16 bit - and i dunno, it actually sounds SOMEHOW reminiscent of older low bit samplers on some basses/kick drums/samples with lots of low end. this kind of crisp ringing that is NOT AT ALL unpleasant, rather it's a great effect. since spdif is digital, apparenlty this is the sound in its natural state. i love it.

i record spdif for all things. i use the panning trick where i put one mono level far to the right/ the other far to the left to dualtrack to save time tracking.

love it and seriously suggest you pick one up

i love spidif. its not much mola for the cables might as well see for urself. but u get very low low noise from using it great compared to quarter inch cables witch are still good. i only got one pair though of good quarter inch cables lol the rest are cheap 10 dollar ones from this store i bought here where i live they had a deal buy 2 get one free.

I've also used the SPDIF connection into my audio interface. For me I wasn't even looking for a cleaner sound, just to free up a couple more inputs on the interface. SPDIF gave me 2 more inputs so it was a go.
