I can't load files any more!!!

Is it OK to format compact flash cards on your PC? (File>Format>OK)

I was just wondering because today I formatted one of my compact flash cards this way instead of on my MPC (MODE>LOAD>UTILIT) and now it doesn't read the card any more.

After I formatted it I loaded some samples on the card and when I put it in my MPC, nothing shows up. The strange thing is, the folders and files are only visible when my MPC is connected to my PC.

I've already contacted Akai about this problem, but any help is greatly appreciated.

You can format the card on your PC. Just make sure that it's formated to FAT (which is FAT16 and not FAT32), but don't do a "quick format". Make sure that box is left unchecked.

What brand CF card do you have and what's the capacity? Also, do you have another card to format on the MPC? If you do the process of elimination, atleast, you'll know whether you have a defective card or pssibly your computer's card reader. If you don't have another card, try uninstalling the CF reader on your PC by clicking the "safely remove hardware" icon in your systray, and reinstall it again. Hope that helps.

Can you still format disks to FAT16 in XP?

You've probably formatted the card to the wrong file system (NTFS probably). Just put the card into your MPC and use the MPC to format it, and you shouldn't have to worry about setting which kind of file system to format the card as.

Nope, format the card via fat16, that's it.
If you want to be able to use that card to transfer from pc/mpc
then roll with this and use filenames 8 characters and below.

if you use longer than 8 character filenames the pc will truncate (chop) the names and your pgms, will not be able to find the correct name. Save yourself the headache and STICK to that.

If you are ONLY going to use the card in the 1k then format it in the 1k use long filenames if you like.

manual says to format the card using mpc

Yes, FAT16 is the correct file system.

I reformatted the CF card in my MPC and loaded some files on to the card just to check if it would work, and it did. From now on I'm always going to format my CF cards in my MPC instead of on the PC to avoid this problem again.

i format using the pc and it works just fine for me...

It works fine for me too, but for some reason the MPC wasn't viewing the files that I loaded on to the card after I formatted it. Besides, its faster to format it in the MPC; why turn on your computer just to format the CF card (unless you hvae a CF card reader for your PC)?

my computer and my 1k are always on at the same time... it's faster for me to use the computer because my comp has a cf card reader... i use soundforge to chop food for my 1k... then i use the 1k to sequence, and i record the beat using the computer... but everyone does things differently, it's what you're more comfortable with right?
