SHould i get the midi wire[usb]or a midi interface?i just want to know which 1 is best to avoid delay.Btw. im tring to use reason as my sound module. thank you people

technically speaking either one is considered an interface. it doesn't matter. if you do decide on the "midi wire" get the m-audio UNO. it's up to you.

but are they both gonna run at the same speed?i would think if i had a little box with it i could do more with it.not sure what but why would anybody want the box besides for show?

yeah, in both, it's called midi latency and you can't escape it.

i think boxes are a little faster but it's pretty indiscernable, get the uno cuz it's cheaper. i use it for the same way you're talking about - it's 40 bucks, and i've used it in live use before so it's no big deal.

I use the midi man 2x2, and have used it with Reason and its been fine, but wouldn't the latentcy rely more on what kind od sound card your runnin?

true, but there is also a latency in the MIDI interface, in fact in any MIDI thru port on, for example, a synth, you get latency, so if you daisy chain lots of instruments together the last one in the chain will sound a bit after the first. the longer the chain the bigger the difference. thats why the MPC samplers have multiple MIDI outs on them, so you can connect an out to each instrument to avoid the latency associated with daisy chaining.

if you get a professional MIDI interface, like the Steinberg ones, or the Pro Tools one, you get round this i think. there may be others too that work perfectly, but in most home setups, with just one MIDI instrument (the MPC) connected to your PC, you ain't gonna notice a damn thing!

The designers of the midi spec were aware of all this and other midi limiations in the 80's and is why they recommend not chaining more than 5 devices.

There are very few people in the world that could discern the delay across 5 midi devices, and I am pretty sure none of them are posting here or are buying top 40 albums.

cheers, i know it'd take more than 5 devices to make the latency dicernable, but was just making a point.
