Ableton LIVE 5 and MPC1000

Anybody using Ableton Live 5 and MPC1000 together ?

I figured this should be the combo from hell,
and it will be when i figure out a solid working method.

The main two features of this combo that will rock when i get them down are...

1 - Using Impulse to sketch mpc programs and midi files.

2 - Sampling Virtual instruments and dumping them to MPC.
(this is rather simple but would be good to refine it)

Any experiences, suggestions, ideas ?

I track my beats out into Live 5, and then mix. Occasionally if I'm bored of sampling, and want some synths I'll rewire Reason 2.5 in there. its definately an ill program. I got it so that it would cut down on how much gear I take to do a show. Live5+mpc+kaoss pad2= a good show..........

im a live4 user. best beat making program i've used thus far.

Sounds like you keeping it simple with the best of the basics.
Helps you play mad music instead of lots of fx...

yeah Live is the best thing on a computer i have come across.
but i had to get that real feel and get off my pc for a breather.

How do you run your live rig ?

yep, im using live 5 and a 1k (+ an xstation and serato is pretty much all i use)

there are tons of possiblities for using the two together, heres a couple of things i do quite often

- make the majority of the beat in my 1k 9 (near finished), then track it out in Live. afterwhich i can mix down, add whatever missing with softsynths. (or just completely remix the track in there).

- sometimes i like jus to work on my 1k on its own. even then i'll use Live sometimes to mangle/stretch/tweak loops & sounds to fit what i'm doing in my 1k. then render those sounds to disk in Live and import them into my 1k and there ready to go, maybe i'll want to chop em some more in the 1k, but they're ready to go none the less.

- another thing i like to do is to program drum patterns in my 1k and then record them in to ableton and make the rest of the track in ableton.

...there are tons of diff ways of working, those are a couple of my favs tho.

i'm also interested in hearing what other people are doing with mpc's and live.

havent tried sequencing softsynths hosted in Live by mpc yet, but its on my list of things to do.

ive just started workin with live but i think i'll stick with making my beats on the mpc its still easier to switch around on track mute screen doin live breaks etc

where i think live will come in is controlling midi to my synth or even recording my synth riffs as audio then controlling them in live.


once i get a yamaha 0X1 this setup should really come together live as master running mpc as slave, beats on mpc synths an samples on live all mixed through 0X1. thats what i had in mind anyway

i have to agree...live + mpc + kaoss = great, simple, live set-up.

(though sometimes i add an evolver, microkorg, and/or yamaha qy70).

I've been battling with this for awhile now. I've been using Live exclusively for about a year. Nothing beats it when I'm writing electronica/trance tracks. I sequence everything in MIDI first, then tweak the envelopes to my liking, then bounce to audio clips where Live truely shines. I can arrange the clips into a complete song, while the original WAV files remain untouched thanks to Live's non-destructive editing.

I use my MPC when I want to have fun. I enjoy sequencing on the MPC more than I do in Live. I have enough outboard gear to compose a song on the MPC without ever turning on the PC. But, when it's time to record the final track, I always use the computer.

When you all say that you 'track to Live' do you mean you record your completed song from beginning to end from the MPC into Live as audio? I'd never tried this. I usually record small clips and then arrange them in Live. The problem is, when I record as audio with the MPC as slave, the loops don't come out quite right. The other option is to record into Live as MIDI and then bounce to audio within Live. Anybody doing it this way?

I feel that MPC + Live would be a very powerful combination if I could harness the pros of each: MPC's strong point: sequencing; Live's strong point: arranging.

i prefer to leave everything as midi till the last minute, cos then you can still change stuff at the end without having to go back to the beginning again.

you can have midi clips in the arrange page too, i don't know if you knew that? makes it a lot easier, cos you can just knock out, like 8 loops in a couples of minutes, and you've got your basic song right there, then you can muck about with the arrangement of those loops to get your song.

i do think tho, for live work, bouncing the clips down to audio is better, uses less cpu for starters!

track1=snare
track2=kick
track3=hi hat
track4=melody so forth and so on..................

I bounce to audio early because I need to free up the DSP on my Creamware card for other tracks. I only have 6 DSP to work with and I can blow that with one sweet pad easily When I make songs with Sonik Synth 2, I leave everything MIDI. Sometimes I don't even bother bouncing to audio. I just render to disk and it sounds great. I'm curious.. when you finally do bounce everything to audio, do you record the whole song at once or do you save individual audio clips? Thanks for your help.

What I meant was do you record each track from beginning to end or do you record as small loops and arrange it in your sequencer? For example, if your kick track is only 4 bars repeated 8 times, do you record all 32 bars as audio or do you record the 4 bars once and copy/paste it 8 times in your sequencer? Thanks.
