Doing a drum roll,

Hey i was just wondering if on an mpc it is possible to do a drum roll type thing. For example like on alot of three six mafia songs the hi hats go at normal tempo then at the end of the bar speed up to a drum roll type thing that is impossible to do by actually doing a drumroll on your mpc. Also i hear people use snares too at the end of a verse or something do a crazy drum roll or even a drum roll on three different drums ya know. So i was wondering is drum rolls (on hi hats and snares and stuff) possible to do on an mpc 1000?

im not in front of mine but i forgot if there was a roll button, i know there is one on my fantom but im not sure how to use it. maybe you use a snare on two different tracks and time it perfectly?

So if there is a roll button and thats how you get this drum roll effect then could you please explain how i use it? and if its by putting the same sound on two different tracks do you just have to practice and time it perfectly? if its something else could you please tell me how to do this i need this in some of my beats ;p

I would take a Kick or Snare and drop it into 16 levels and hold down tap tempo while hitting the different pads in any desired sequence. Keep in mind tap tempo on the 1000 doesn't work in a preview mode so you will have to hit record and test it out. Hopefully the new OS will fix this.

Just one method I guess, there could be more.

Use time correct with note repeat - just expiriment with it. change the times and layer them. that way u can take the roll in and out whenever you please.

I asked the same exact question like a year ago and got nothing but flak from the people here.

I am to lazy to make my own so i sample drum rolls, i usually just use a drum roll and run it by a band pass and tweak it from there, if i dont have a drum roll for a centain kit then i use a different drum roll and make it sound the same. Sampling drum rolls are the easiest ya know, you just cut it up hit the pad and it rolls before the 1st bar hits and viola!!!!

Hypes - how do you use note repeat and time correct? would i hold down note repeat while i hold the snare or hold down note repeat and hit it once, or more than once? also what exactly is time correct?

as you are holding the note repeat, you hold the pad you want repeated. you can hold a single pad or multiple pad, it doesn't matter.

Yea or use the sliders if 16 Levels doest do it for you

in a sense, yes. but when you do your rolls you may want to change the T.C. on the hats.

say you are doing a beat at 1/16, when you get to your roll, change the T.C. to 1/32. (depending on how fast you want your roll to be)

whats swing ? i hear about it but im not quite sure what it means? can anyone explain how you use swing?

also assign your pitch slider to you high hats while doing note repeat for that Mandy fresh style. People round here love when I do that.

swing is just a type of groove/feel you get when you play/record your beats.

try this when you get back in front of your mpc..

go to T.C. and on either 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 to the right you will see swing 50% try adjusting it up to like 56% and record your hats holding the note repeat. you will hear a difference in the way the hats are played.

at this point you really need to just expiriment with it. you will have a much better understanding.

yeah I'm with solah on this, for a programmed sounding roll or fill you can build up somethin on the MPC that will achieve that, if you are looking for somethin a lil more seemless or natural sounding spend the extra time time digging for the roll perhaps.
