Getting a sample to play only as long as the pad is pressed?

I have a sample, as well as a snare, that i want to only play as long as the pad is pressed, and play in full when i hold the pad down
I rarely use this setting but remember using it in the past with the old OS but CANNOT find the setting on the new OS
i have a pattern floating in my head so any quick help will be greatly appreciated

mode program, set the sample to 'note on'

it's called note on. in opposed to one shot. you find it by going to mode+ program. scroll to the sample that you want then press the window button and change it to "note on"
