a situation i would use Patched Phrase

when would be a situation i would use this, c'mon help me out this is my 1st time asking for help, thanks.

Drum loop. Chopping into slices and then using a patched phrase to keep it in time with your tempo.

here's my question w/ patched phrase

wouldn't it be better to just zone it to separate files/new pgm and recreate the pattern? essentially it's the same thing, and you get the added bonus of extra control over individual note attack, decay, etc...

more work, definitely...but maybe i'm missing something?

I still dont understand why i would need patched phrase can some one explain it to me a little bit more.

I had just viewed it as a quicker and automatic way to chop up a sample and "stretch" it to the song tempo... accomplishing the same thing as slice, new prog, and sequence but all in one step. Also, it's maybe a little cleaner to just manage one 'patch phrase' sample then to deal with all the little slices.

However, that got me thinking, for the patch phrase, can you adjust filter, envelope etc. all at one time for the whole phrase? Cause that would be another reason to use it.

(and don't tell me rtfm, i'm just at work/school right now and feeling lazy )

yes. you assign the PP to a pad and have the same options as any other sample. there must be more to it. i mean its not really using chops like chops should be used and more like using "choppy sounding loops". i'll continue to use sliced samples so i can plays the notes like i want them but gonna have to explore patch phrase some more.

Patch Phrases are very convenient. I have about 100 different drum loops right now that are in pp's and set into programs. So in creating a song. I can get my leads going, then just load up drums instantly to tempo.

on the one hand, you are pretty right, but on the other, what if you got a groove, that you can't reprogram that tight...?

haha that don't happen to me son, i'm a surgeon. if something doesn't reprogram right all it needs is a little tlc w/ timestretch on certain sliced samples and it's right as rain.

however, this is not for the easily bored, it takes a LONG time and a LOT of patience.

i guess patched phrase is better for loop samplers and people who don't particularly want to rearrange...more for the dj, less for the composer/patchwork sampler.

still one hell of a useful tool if you ever want to resample your own stuff and don't feel like rechoppnig

however, here's a useful trick i've been using. if you resample a drum pattern say w/ an effect on it and you don't want to lose anything/dont want to spend ages rechopping, slow the tempo down so the chops are easier, then just go back and trim

regardless practice will make you chop faster than a japanese sushi chef

another little trick ive found for u guys is to make the release a lttle large in pp and u get a cool little stuttering effect- chaa
