Layering on the 1000?? Easier way?

Hey schollars, i need some help with somehting..juss purchased a mpc 1000 BK and loving it. i used to use Cubase sx3 rewired with reason 3, and some maudio controllers to make beats (trigger finger (w/ battery 2.0 & radium 49 for the synths).

Since i jumpeg on the MPC i literally fell in love with the versatility of the machine.

Hers my problem..i want to layer my drums, and by that i dont mean just by pressing mode->program and adding the layer on one of the 4 slots..

after i tried to filter one of the layers, it put the effect on the whole track..whaddup with that?

my homie used a 2000, he recently grabbed the 2500 and is having the same problem layering with ease on the new OS...what are some ways around this?

You can resample the main out, or multiple samples on multiple pads all filtered different, or you can filter in Cubase since thats what you use, and then just render from Cubase straight to the mpc as a .wav....

u can always just put da sounds on differentpads and then hit both pads at once wit tight quantizing so theyll be dead on

or play it once, and copy the notes to another track.

there are a bunch of different ways.
this is how i do it.

say the program is called "drums1."

i just make a copy of "drums1" and call it "drums2".
filter the second program "drums2" how i want it to sound layered under drums1.
now i'll record stuff with "drums1" on track 1.
copy track 1 to track 2 and switch the program to "drums2."

now you have two layers playing exactly the same thing but you can readjust the filter setting for each layer as you like. sometimes you'll hear phasing issues, but at least this works.


using the track velocity you can also boost the filtered track more as well.
i just prefer this over resampling every time i want to readjust something.

so theres no way to have two sounds play off of one pad? i've only been using the layer function to store different samples on the same pad to later choose with the q-link slider, eg: 1st layer is a normal kick, 2nd is w/effects 3rd is reversed etc.

sure yes there is but you have to filter them all with the same filter, not separately, that's the issue.

I fail to understand the confusion.

If you set multiple sampels to a pad (4 per pad max, obviously) the default behavior is that all samples on the pad play simultaneously.

However, there's only one filter which affects ALL samples on the pad, not just a given layer. Well, two filters in running parallel or series, but only one set of filters per pad. Note, however, that each layer does have its own EG (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't had any MPC time lately, **** school...) and definitely can be set to either Note On or One Shot individually. They can also each be tuned individually, etc.

You can certainly layer "normal kick", "effects kick", "reverse kick" on different layers of a pad. But you have to prepare the samples before loading them, you can't set effects params, etc per layer. So as various people on here have said, you can accomplish the equivalent it a number of ways: resample, copy tracks and change programs to an "affected program", or simply trigger multiple pads with different settings simultaneously.

Anyway, hopefully that clears up some confusion...

yeah, its a huge/simple mistake th at makes no sense.

give people the ability to control 4 samples off one pad yet,there is no simultaneous pad command like on the 2000?

there's ways around it but its still dumb...

Yeah, I wonder if with enough pestering they might implement that as a feature though.

In 2.10, for instance, we now have "mute other pads" options like the 2k had, in addition to the "mute group" option the 1k has had from the start.

Dunno how likely this is (we're talking about Akai here) but it might happen...
