Korg EMX1 or Korg ESX with mpc 1000?

Waddap, i want to buy a korg electribe cos of the way i can manipulate effects from the 1000 with it. My question is:

I can't deside between these two:

The Korg ESX or the Korg EMX...

both are exactly the same, except that the esx is a sampler, (i don't know if it has sounds), And the EMX is a synth..... Any of u guys works with one of these and can give me some advise?

I want to use them for the effects and the real time control of filters etc. But a nice synth with it sounds perfect, cos i want an extra synth to...

That is a tough one...

Id say get the ESX cause if what you really want is to tweak out your samples with effects, you can do a _lot more_ by actually sampling them into the ESX first. With the EMX you could just use 'input thru to effects' but there aren't as many options that way. (sample start manipulation, and arpeggiation, would be missing, to think of a couple)


But its true the emx has some extra synth stuff tho.

u should get the esx jsut because i wanna know ur reveiw on that. the mx is cool but its jsut another sound module with 9 drum parts and 5 synth parts thast more geard towards dance and hiphop.

I have an EMX-1 (in addition to other gear) that I use with my MPC1K.
If you carefully read the specs on each machine (ESX-1) the differences are obvious. Both units are step sequencers with great tweakability.

The ESX is a sampler. It ships with some sounds built in but since it is a sampler it has "no sounds" Very "tweaky". The ESX has STEREO inputs so you can send your MPC1K sounds right into and effect them or sample them. I don't have one.

The EMX is a drum machine with 5 Mono synths. It's great for BASS lines and "synth" sounds. I LOVE it. If you like tweaking sounds it's great.
It also has hundreds of drum sounds built in that sound great. The drums are very "tweakable" so if you think that it sounds like a tired 808 or 909 you can easily tweak the sound and add effects. Drums are great for layering with your MPC1K beats.
The effects are excellent too. Overall the EMX unit is kinda grimey and "harsh digital virtual analog". I like it. You may not. The EMX only has a MONO input on it. This is lame! It should have a Left and right like the ESX.
ESX has many "built in" patterns and songs. Ignore them. They are lame.
VERY EASY TO USE.

The only reason I don't have both the ESX and the EMX is SPACE. They are both Table top units like the MPC1000. I'm out of room for table top units! Too bad they are not rack units.

If you only have the MPC1K right now and you need something to compliment it you may want to save your cabbage and get a Motif ES rack or a Fantom XR rack (I have an XR) . Much more expensive in the short term but likely more useful in the long term.

Your money would be more well spent buying a multi-effects processor...

thanx for the replies... I thought about an fx unit... but since a couple of producers i know like r.i.p. jay dee use an esx for the "sweeps" and ish, i thought it would make a big value to add to my mpc (not cos i want a jay dee sound, but because of the "tweakabitlity")...

an fx unit is something i can buy next to the esx (it has stereo in so if i buy one it's that one).. i have €800 to spend, so my plan was to buy an esx AND two fx units.... that way i have an effect on every out of the mpc 1000.....

oh, and an fantom rack or motif rack is definitly an option! I REALLY LIKE TO HAVE ONE (or both)..... BUT.... I DON"T HAVE THE BUDGET!.... so that's no option......
