i''ve already emailed vst about this and wasn't sure which email address at
akai to usE to ask them about this problem with 1000's shorting out.

now, at first i thought it was just me, but then i saw someone else posted
about this problem back in december. and they were having the same
exact problem as i am now....

check the link
http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=41300

now here's me explanation in more detail

------------------------------------------------------------
apparently, directly under the white connector piece for pad 10 there is a
mounting screw that is inside the 1000. it is unfortunatley in a perfect spot
to make contact with the 2 pins for pad 10's connector and cause the 1000
to short out and the screen to go blank.

it happened a few times and i didnt understand why. then when i looked
inside i saw the problem was the mounting screw under pad 10 touching
both pins that connect pad 10 to the pad bank board. hitting pad 10 would
sometimes cause this problem toa rise now and then.

these pics are the very first tim ei i've ever opened up my 1000.

so this burnt connector was not possible from me doing anything wrong
internally....

now, my main concern is not the burnt connector. my problem is that now
that it shorted out a couple too many times, my 1000 does not function
correctly.

---------------------------
banks B and C are not accesible.
some of the arrow keys dont work.
play/start, rec, overdub, and stop
all do not work.
if i press certain keys other random groups of keys light up that shouldn't...
------------------------------------

if the whole pad bank is disconnected then it powers up correctly once or
twice before malfunctioning again. then if i reconnect the pad bank, again it
will power up and function properly maybe once or twice. but then it
continues to malfunction from there on.

...so my question is have any of you encountered this before and do you
know what might have been fried/shorted out?

also for all of you who have opened your 1000 make sure not to tighten the
pad bank back down too tight cause it will increase your chances of having
the screw make contact with a pad connector if you hit that pad (and then being in the same sad position i am in now).

bleh...peace.

oh dear, sounds like your mpc has had it to me. is there no way of putting some insulating tape over the screw so that nothing shorts out against it? can you get a pic of the the screw in situ? sorry to hear this man.

thanks for the condolences mr modnar.

by the time i tried putting tape over the screw (as well as eventually removing the screw completely) it was too late. the damage was done....

and if vst tells me its done i'm gonna sell it as is,
in case anybody wants to have a parts 1000 (extra pads, buttons, screen, card drive, etc....)

my mpc is dead, i'm drowning in vinyl, just quit my job so i have all this free time. and i'm stuck at home, cause i got a $300 ticket yesterday
while trying to drive to a j dilla memorial party....

yo f*ck 2006 for real.
peace.

well i'd try getting a refund, how long have you had it? surely this problem is down to bad manufacturing?

nah, i've had my 1000 for two years.

obviously the store i got it at isn't gonna take it back,
and akai will laugh at me if they even respond....

lame...

i say, if nothing is wrong leave it alone.

i mainly put this post up so that if people experience the same things happening to their 1000 they will at least know what it most likely is.
then they can try and put elctrical tape (or whatever) over those screws.

but, definitely for those that have already opened their 1000 (to replace pads and whatnot) they might want to think about
taping over the screw and taking care of this before it becomes an issue.
and i can't say it enough, make sure not to screw your pad bank too far down cause it will increase your chnaces of frieing your 1000.
there was a good number times where i had my 1000 open and taken apart and it worked fine. but then when i would put it all back together the pad bank was screwed down a bit too far and my 1000 wouldn't work. take it apart, it works fine. put it back together and it doesn't work again.

i just wish i figured it out before it was too late....

and i actually wasn't even going to post anything about this until i randomly found someone else's post from december describing EXACTLY the same problem.

i just don't understand how akai did not notice this.

the screw is DIRECTLY underneath the connector pins for pad 10.

well, hopefully this post will help some of you out before you end up in my shoes.

peace....

another thing, i can't understand how you can screw down the pad panel 'too much'? i mean, if it sits flush against the metal chassis, then it's not going to go further down, is it? please explain.
