yo try reason before you get an expensive synth - reason will introduce you to the word of synths smoothly. later you can get the real thing.

Since last summer I have not had a place to live, while travelling and crashing at friends and relatives I got myself the MPC 1000 mainly for it´s portability and the fact that a sampler and sequencer is the only thing you need to complete a good song. When I settle down (hopefully soon), I´ll get my studio from storage:

Akai S2000
Novation Super Basstation
Yamaha AN200
Roland M-SE 1

PowerMac 7600 (pimped)

a few multieffects, a big Behringer mixer and a patchbay (everyone with outboard gear should have a patchbay or two, makes you creative)

Nord Modular G2 synth (does pretty much everything i could hope for)
E-mu e4X sampler (does everything the MPC can't)
Akai MPC-1000 (my favorite hardware sequencer, had a 2000xl)
Behringer BCR-2000 (for controlling other gear via midi)
Lexicon MPX-1 reverb/fx (just got this, sounds great)

Equipment I use regularly:
MPC1000 (x2) - great workflow! (since OS2)
Akai CD3000xl (I love its sound, the filters...)
Akai s20 (amazing "hands on" unit, great lo-fi sound, punchy and round)
Denon DN1000 CD player (small and effective, really small)
Soundcraft compact 10 mixer (small and effective again, great routing capabilities, sounds great - build is so and so...)

Equipment I use so little that I'm trying to get rid of (selling at good price; in Paris - PM me if interested):
Akai z8 (too sophisticated)
Yamaha RS7000 (too bulky and plastic, great possibility but uncomfortable implementation: but very advanced sonically speaking)
Roland SH-32 (why did I buy this? I have no use for that piece of gear)

Equipment I barely use but keep for sentimental reasons:
Yamaha qy70 (smallest synth sequencer ever produced, works on batteries, sounds great)
Yamaha rm1x (great unit all in all, metal, solid, sounds OK - not great, does a few things the MPC1000 sequnecer can't do...)

- Akai Professional MPC 1000 Music Production Center
- Technics SLD-20 Direct Drive Automatic Turntable System
- Numark PT-01 Portable Turntable
- JVC RS-5 Stereo Receiver
- Radio Shack SSM - 8030 Stereo Mixer
- JBL Control 5 175 Watt Two-Way Compact Control Monitor Loudspeakers
- Behringer MS16 Monitor Speakers

I use the Behringer MS16 Monitor Speakers for my PC and the JBL Control 5 175 Watt Two-Way Compact Control Monitor Loudspeakers for the rest of my setup.
