.... v2.0. I'm asking b/c i have a dial up on a garbage computer with more viruses than pam anderson and would never be able to download 2.1. i asked at guitar center but got the expected blank stare from the salesman

i hear you no doubt, but i was also under the impression that the black one's w/ v2.1 installed came with hard drives. is this incorrect?

got a BK from Japan: it came with OS 2.0 which crashed on saves... (???) and with a few midi bugs. I updated to 2.1 as soon as I could and now things are OK.
The BK may come with a HD mounting kit (not guaranteed, depends on shop policy) but NO hard drive. You have to buy the hard drive and install it yourself.

The OS update is only a few hundred KB to download, which can done in a few minutes even on dialup connections. So I don't see any problem ahead.

so was all the talk of a black one with hd installed a rumor?

you got things mixed up. the BK was announced with OS 2 which gives HD support to the MPC1k. The HD is supported by the OS but requires an adapter kit to be installed. The adapter kit (HDM10) may come as standard on some BK, but this ios not sure and depends (as I said earlier) on shop policy apparently.
