I have a general understanding of what it means, but if one of you guys could give me a personal example of how you use both and if you have expanded both. I just bought my MPC 1000 and I have a lot of space on my PC hard drive. I don't plan on traveling much at all. Do I really need to upgrade both? Thanks in advance!

The MPC's RAM stores all the samples as you work on/with them. When you turn off your MPC the RAM clears so you save all of your work, samples etc to the Compact Flash card. When you want to work again you load all your samples etc. back into the RAM from the Compact Flash.

yes, the memory (ram) is about $150 if you buy it from AKAI, but you can get the same amount of memory for about $40 if you don't buy it from them. Read the Announcement sticky about RAM recommendations at the top of the MPC 1000 forum. Everything you need to know is there. You have to make sure you get the right type.
