question about question mark?

have been using os 2.1 4 afew months, has crashed afew times but nothing major. However over the last few days have had acouple of times where when i have tried to save the song i was working on using entire memory as an autoload file, the screen has said system error. When i go back a couple or more samples have question marks in front of them and no longer play or are recognised.
I still had 5mins of record memory left and the disk i was using is the latest sandisk 2gb.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Is there anything i can do other than back up on PC more often or revert to old OS? This happened only twice but is pretty worrying

There are some other threads about this problem, along with a DIRECTORY ERROR that people were getting while saving. Use this method for saving, I have had no more problems since i started using this method. If you want more info, search for the other threads, a lot of people have had this same problem.


The method I have for avoiding the new folder and system error bugs involves "refreshing" the directory tree before creating the new folder. I was getting the new folder bug quite frequently, but since I started this "refresh" technique, I have not gotten a single error. No more DIRECTORY ERRORs, and no more SYSTEM ERRORS. Here's what I do:

1. In the SAVE directory tree, I move the cursor to the folder I want to save to and I hit RENAME, then in the RENAME dialog I hit COPY. This step is only so that I don't have to re-enter the individual letters when I get to step 5.

2. Close the RENAME dialog then delete the folder.

3. Close the directory tree. (At this point, if you go back into the directory tree, you will see that, in fact, the folder you just deleted has magically re-appeared as if it had never been deleted. Going back into the tree is not actually a step I take in the saving process, it is simply something strange I noticed when I was originally troubleshooting it.)

4. Here's where the "refresh" comes in... So after closing the directory tree (step 3), you should be back in the main SAVE dialog. Move the cursor up to the field at the top where you select where you want to save (i.e. MEMORY CARD or INTERNAL MEMORY or HARD DISK if you have one). I then change the option to INTERNAL MEMORY, and then I change it back to MEMORY CARD. That's the "refresh". Now the directory tree correctly reports that the folder was, in fact, deleted.

5. I then hit NEW to make a new folder, then in the NEW FOLDER dialog I hit PASTE (since i copied the name of the folder in step 1).

6. Then I SAVE ENTIRE MEMORY to the folder I just re-created.


I'm assuming this method would work for saving to the hard drive too, but I haven't been able to test that since I don't have a hard drive installed.

As far as I can tell, it is the combination of not overwriting, and "refreshing" that has eliminated the error for me. since I have been saving like this I have had ZERO errors. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

I would recommend a backup and reformat if you have been having the error a lot because you probably have some corruption already on the disk which could cause additional headaches later.

Corrupt files suck.
I've ordered a HD and am hoping to recieve it today.
I've tried everything including `TBonus's method, which does work for a while, but inevitably i ends up in the s***, it seems random to be honest.

If the HD doesn't do the trick I'm gonna sell my 1000 and get a 2500
