STEP EDIT

Just starting to get my hands dirty with Step Edit.
From I can make out, Step Edit is the serious S***.
I'm starting to thing Step Edit is what alot of cats are missing?
Please tell me if I'm wrong!

Any Tips & Tricks for Step Edit anyone??
What do use step edit for in your tune?

If you take a look at the advert for the MPC 1000 e-book there's a couple of sample chapters that show you some tips for using step edit. I'd never used it before cuz i took one look at it and got scared but it's really easy to use!

Check that demo for a start, it's pretty interesting.

Uuuhhmmmm......yeah. As I have said and will say many times more; step edit is my best friend. Seq edit is my second best friend. Got no real tricks or nothing, you just gotta play with it and figure out what works best for you.

nudge certain notes forward and back a couple ticks. this can be done either in step edit manually or in seq edit. it's a great trick for nice hats/snares. keep your kicks knocking straight on the beat (swing or no) but nudge your hats later and your snares earlier. this can be done in the mpc or later in your daw. the result is more natural feeling drums, and it has a groove that a lot of people on this forum neglect.

I think I saw this mentioned before somewhere, but with step edit and a midi keyboard (or even the pads) you are sitting on hot arppeggiator.

In Step Record mode if you setup the "duration of recorded notes" to the Timing correct value (say 8th notes), and select "Auto Step increment" to on. Then each key press will produce a note of equal length and the sequencer will automatically step to the next position by the value set in Timing correct field.

You just need to pull out a chord book and make sure you are entering in the correct pitches.

Once setup right, it is as simple as pressing the 3 or 4 keys on the keyboard one after the other until you're done. You can even get in there and alter note timing for some Arppeggiated funkness. Not to mention recording note variation data on top of this to mess with Filter or even Attack.

The 1K takes arppeggiation to the next level with a bit of work.

that's also a very good tip. wtf, didn't you just get your mpc? crazy.

anyway, you can use that tip w/ reason as the module. adjust the portomento in reason a little bit so the notes glide into each other rather than just hit, the result is smooth.

No, I had a 1K when they first came out (old OS), but sold it. Pretty much forget what it could do, but a thorough read over the manual soon brought things back to memory. With 2.1, thing is a new machine now, and it suits my needs exactly due to lack of space and it being a compact sequencing/sampling piece of hardware (I like hands on).

1K packs some power for it's size.
