Hey

I just picked up an mpc 1000 and think i got an alright understanding of it so far. Im at the point where im comfortable enough with the features that i want to start putting beats together and get some hands on practice rather than just reading non stop.

My question is when sequencing a song how do you all do it? My understanding is that you have different sequences with several tracks on them and you have the sequences variate through out the song (example: chorus has a sequence, verses there own sequences and so on). Is this how its done or is there a better way laying out your beats.

my method is basically this: i first make the beat, then i make the song. i make 8 bars of a beat, that is seq 1. then, i copy seq 1 to 2 and turn seq 1 into the start of the song. then i move on to 2, copy it to 3, and turn 2 into whatever comes AFTER the start of the song. i keep moving like that, i encounter breakdowns, and finally i end the song.

Word

Thats basically what i have been doing and thought it was the most logical way of doing it and probably the way its meant to be done. I just thought id ask cause i was reading some posts and saw that some people dont use the song mode at all.

Thanks again for your help

it's possible to do it that way, but it's probably worth trying out just using one sequence. i tried it recently, and found you learn to play the pads a lot better if you do the whole song in one sequence continuously. of course you'll need your basic beat built already, but once you've done that, just learn to play each track live, and then record a long sequence of each. this way you can make changeups and breakdowns on the fly. i find it's just easier to do it this way, as you can flow with the song. each to their own in the end though, i guess.

hope this helps.

yea i also prefer the linear apprach but i think going to start messing with song mode and see if any features there make my work flow better
