My 4000 is on the auction block. I still use the 2000xl but what I want to know is what advantages does the 2000xl have over the 1000? I can think of a bunch the 1000 has over the 2000xl but here is all I can come up with (with little knowledge of the 1000) that the 2000xl has over the newer unit. Anyone wanna chime in?

1. 1000 has no tilting screen.
2. only 4 outs
3. aparently smaller pads (biggest problem in my opinion) but I will have to feel them out before really judging.

I'm thinking these are far outweighed by the fat32 system of the 1000 which allows you to drop info from a comp to a copact flashcard, more memory, onboard effects standard.....I'm starting to think more and more that the 1000 will be the 2000xl killer. I didn't think so at first but the more I read...Someone wanna change my mind?

If you want to transfer your existing projects to it, you have to set all the program params settings again as these are not carried over. That alone is the killer for me. If you don't use the params much, it's not a problem - but I cannot imagine having to manually set 200 odd pads per song with attack, decay, tuning and filter settings (some of these settings are also not supported by the MPC1000, such as velocity controlled filter and attack).

Hence, it will never replace my MPC2000XL - although I may buy one at some point in the future, as I'll probably want to make some sounds and tutorials for it.

does anyone know what exactly you can save on the flashcard? could you save a beat to a wav. file? and export it right from the mpc so you wouldnt have to hook it up to anything for quick listening if you had a flashcard reader on your computer?

Thats deffinetly a killer, tutor. Another thing that bugs me is not being able to use scsi drives but thats not that big of a deal, assuming that compact flash kits will be made, other than that, i guess people with cd-rom's will have to transfer them to computer than to compact flash cards.

Not being able to use SCSI is a step forward in my opinion, not backward. The 1000 is USB mass storage enabled meaning you could hook up a 120gig USB hard drive to it if you so wanted, then hook the same USB hd to the computer for retrieval or storage. SCSI while being fast, is a very fickle, and somewhat antiquated stanard.

In terms of storage, the 1000 has the 2000xl beat, hands down. In fact, this is one area where there is no competition. With the 1000, no looking for old apple 4 gig HDs, or SCSI Cd-Rom drives, mounting kits for IDE zips, overpriced Zip disks, going to older operating systems to use 250 internals....Nope...not there.

If my plan works out, I live 20 mins away from the main Musician's Friend warehouse, and if they really are getting the 1000s oct 31, then I'll have myself a 1000 by friday... its comin' up

"If you want to transfer your existing projects to it, you have to set all the program params settings again as these are not carried over. "

Not so. I am writing a free MPCxxxx->MPC1000 program convertor so you will be able to transfer work seamlessly to the MPC1000.

"could you save a beat to a wav. file?"

No. MPC's are not hard disk recorders. Never have been.

" The 1000 is USB mass storage enabled meaning you could hook up a 120gig USB hard drive to it if you so wanted"

No true. The MPC1000 is a USB slave device, meaning that is has to have a master USB device (like your computer). A USB HD is also a USB slave. You cannot get results out of connecting two slave devices together. That is like connecting a USB printer to a USB hard drive. I already have been using CF media will all my samplers for years.

A problem with not having SCSI is many people with large collections of sample CD's (I have 100+ myself) cannot directly load from them anymore. I doubt I would be willing to put a PC in the studio just for transferring samples from akai/roland/emu CDs to CF cards. This is certainly a big plus for the older MPC series.

The MPC1000 will be great for people without an MPC, but seeing how many us existing owners got by without the MPC1000 for this many years will do just fine. Regardless, I will be getting the MPC1000 since I have software to write for it.

from what I've heard,

no timestretch, no chromatic assign / keymapping, Killers for me, damn.

with 2GB flash, external hard drives are obsolete, you can have over 100 GB of flash cards in the same space a HD takes up.

I also wonder how it sounds.

Yeah, if you had thousands of dollars to spend on flashcards. A 256 cf is about $50 right now.

That is the Internart PCD-15 connected to the internal SCSI connector. I bought it used for $15. However, I am using the newer PCD-47B in it now.

And you can go back and forth from your computer to that reader seemlessly? Hmmm, interesting. Can I use my Canon camera as the reader for my computer and back up to my computer that way?

Also, is there an installation guide somewhere for that flash card reader in the MPC? Thanks!

I have been considering buying an mpc for quite a while now, almost bought a fulloption 2000xl 'til Akai started talking about the mpc 1000. I have been studying the user manual and there is somthing that troubles me big time: There seems to be no way you can reverse a sample in the MPC-1000. Or I'm missing something or the Akai bwoyz are f*cking up big time :?

bboy why wait till Fri? The mpc1000 is already out. $879.99 American Musical will let you pay 3 payments of 293.33.
