mpc 1000 recording

I just got an mpc a couple days ago and have learned alot about it. yesterday i decided that i wanted to record a song to my comuter and after listening to the finished product it sounded like crap. i used acid 4.0 and my stock sound card. i know i new need a new soundcard but would acid be apart of the problem? also whats better for starting out after using reason 3 for a year. cubase, protools, or any others alike. any suggestions?

also bear in mind that the way something sounds when it is playing from the source is usually totally different than it sounds when it gets recorded. i.e: when monitoring the output of the mpc, things sound fantastic. but when you record something, sometimes the sound is shit (usually too muffled, etc...). also if you are recording a full song onto the pc, you may need to multi-track the recording then remix it after you have recorded it, then apply mastering effects, etc... (if you want a 'CD' quality mix).

make sure that when you are recording to your computer that the input levels on the pc are high enough without clipping (-2db is usually pretty good). this will at least ensure that the recorded track is not muffled but you will probably still at least need some eq to clean it up.

a better sound card will obviously help too but you will still have to multi-track the recording. N-Track is a pretty good recording program (ntrack.com) and it's cheap but you will definitely want to go with a good soundcard that has a decent selection of inputs.

I can use my standard sound engine on my motherboard and it will come out sounding pretty damn good.


Acid could be set at a higher sample rate than the card can handle.
the card could be set at a low sample rate.

THAT doesn't help AT ALL if you can't detail the shittyness of the sound so we/all of us can think of some things that might be your problem. Just saying that doesn't help, try again.

the problem is it just sounds really low quality. theres almost no bass and pretty much sounds like i recorded it off of a computer mic. i hope that makes sense. i havent tried any different sample rates yet. but i will give it go. thanks.

haven't used / heard that particular model... but i've had a couple of m audio cards, and they sh1t all over anything else i've bought. hardware and software / drivers is top notch for mac and pc. the m audio firewire audiophile is a little beast and sounds great too.
