Patch The Phrase

you guys have a patched phraze function??

Was it a feature build by Akai or is it a new thing added by the japanese guy who made the unoffical OS 3?

this is on the official 2.1 os release by akai. and that guy on youtube is me.... i don't use that feature at all. however, it is a good way to chop your samples. i just didn't do a good job in that video. that particular video was just to show that feature and the machanics on how to do it. it wasn't to show how good i am at using it.

I think its useless if you chop in to 16 slices with a melodic sample. If its a break though it is definitely helpfull. I think they made it with drums in mind.

im not saying you re bad i was saying the patched phrase sounds bad
i just dont understand akai implemented this feature in the mpc2500 & mpc1000 and not in the mpc4000. i feel cheated

The thing that's critical with patch phrase is to get the slices to line up with instrument notes, or drum hits, and to contain one note/chord/hit/whatever, per slice. That gives it the best chance for success, and it can work very nicely. I've recorded my bass right into the MPC, put one slice per note of the bassline and then made a patchphrase that scaled very nicely over a wide tempo range with few artifacts.

The crucial thing is to have one slice per note or drum/cymbal hit.

i know... i just wanted to say that i don't like that feature on the mpc. i'd rather do my patch phrasing in Recycle. it does a much cleaner job than on the mpc.

after seeing sparq's video i tried it once on a melody sample.

got the clicking and whatnot.

i might try it again with a break.

but otherwise, f**k it.

Chop on the transients, one note per slice, and it'll sound better.
