QUESTIONS FOR A BEGGINER.

Hey I have been working on Ableton for my hip-hop www.myspace.com/supertoastor it is more funk then hip-hop and everything. I have been at it for 10 months and got a 1000 a 2 weeks ago. I was very intimidated so I didnt use it a lot cept to chop up records. Now I need to make beats cuz I have just been samplin a straight funk sample off vinyl. A few questions... can I take instrumentals out of a piece of music and leave the drum beats behind? If so please tell me how because I usually use a wa wa filter on ableton to do that but if there is anything else please tell me. Can I make my own drum kit... if so then how. no. that can't really be done. what you're doing w/ a filter in ableton is no different than the filters/eq in the mpc, but that's not really what sampling is about. instead of vertically dissecting layered wavs, it's about horizontally chopping open samples.

yes - sample a drum break, chop it using the mpc's chopshop, and assign it to the pads. boom, drumkit.

or you could even sit in front of a real acoustic drum set and hit each drum/ cymbal while recording the sound into your mp and then you could chop those up and have your very own superstar drum kit. this is fun

more fun things to do with the mpc in record mode and a decent instrument mic hooked up:

hit a bucket
a can
pop a balloon
punch a baby
smash a watermelon
break a glass bottle
rip some paper
clap your hands
bounce a basketball
make your dog bark
shoot your shot gun in the air (outside)
load and put one in the chamber (great for that hard core gangsta sh#t)
flush your toilet
shake spray paint can
speaker phone while dialing numbers
pop cork on champagne bottle
open a beer can
drink 15 and then pass out

punch a baby

while we're at it, shaking babies after feeding them marbles and thumbtacks make for good maracas

damn i didnt think anyone knew about that one but me. it works best with new born seals though

find some sort of surface or whatever that you think makes a cool drum sound

then put your mic in your bathtub/shower

smack the sh!t out of your "drum"

creates a cool effect
