Sync Pro Tools and 1000

hey ive looked through the forum and still cant figure this out. i would like to slave pro tools to the mpc, as i do all the sequencing there. i cant figure out how to get pro tools to start when i hit play on the mpc. i have the midi out of the mpc port b into the interface, but i cant fiure out what i hit in pro tools to make it work. btw im using the jj 3.0 os

there are plenty of topics that has just recently been started on the same thing, but i dont think u can slave pt. out of curiousity why would you wanna slave pt?

U can Slave Pro Tools - but like J Wales says - why?

I use my MPC slaved to Pro Tools for tracking - but its PT controlling playback of the MPC there.

If u really want to know how you have to have MTC enabled in your MPC and Pro Tools set to receive MTC from it (can't rmember the exact menu in PT where u set this - not at my studio just now).

But there are many threads recently posted on this - do a search.

i want to be able to sequence witht he mpc using my triton as a sound module ass well as various plugins that i have, would it be better to make pro tools the master, i am new to pro tools, so im not sure what the easiest setup would be

I take it you want to use Pro Tools for plug ins (effecting the audio from your Triton or MPC as you play back sequenced stuff from the MPC?)

Then you do indeed need to have Pro Tools slaved to the MPC in order to do this.

Put the output from the Triton etc on audio tracks in PT and record enable tem - you can now listen to these outputs being routed through Pro Tools inputs and any plug ins you use will be effecting the sound sources you have connected through PT.

Like I said before - In the MPC enable MIDI Time Code to be output from whichever MIDI port on the MPC you have your PT interface connected to (Mbox - 002 etc).

In Pro Tools itself you need to tell it to expect MTC from the MPC on whichever MIDI port its connected to.

I think its in the Preferences Page > Synchronisation. Either that or its under the Session menu in the Setup menu. (I think)

i have the mpc set right, just i cant get Pro Tools to receive the mtc , i get the audio, just protools doesnt start

why not just track into pt and then apply your effects. whats the difference of applying the effects before they are in pt? i guess i dont quite understand whats going on.

I'm assuming he's using the Pro Tools effects in a kind of "live" sense - auditioning sequenced sounds with the plug ins PT offers before comitting to anything. Thats all I can think of anyway. We all have our own way of working I suppose.

I'm with you thouh J Wales - I track into PT first then apply effect etc - The other way seems unneccesarily complicated.

so if i wanted to track into pro tools, how would i set it so the mpc starts when i hit play in pro tools, i just want them to work tegether so i can sequence plugins and the triton on the mpc, then track out into pro tools

send Midi clock from Pro Tools and set the MPC to receive MIDI clock from it - press spacebar on PT to activate transport - hey presto - synced

i wish it was that easy, ive tried every possible setting on both the mpc and protools and pro tools still says "waiting for sync"

Right - here we go - a detailed step by step description of how I have it set up. I'm using JJ's OS 4.32 and Pro Tools LE 7.3 on an Apple Mac G5 using Os10.4 Tiger

Right the two ways this can work are using the MPC slaved to Pro Tools (for tracking of beats - the way I use it) And Pro Tools as slave - using the MPC as master -(the way you originally asked for help with - for auditioning plug ins etc.)

Settings are as folows.

MPC as Slave:

MPC settings - Go to MPC sync page - set up as follows:

Sync in 1 (SLAVE)
MIDI CLOCK

Send MMC - Off

Pro Tools Settings:

Go to the Setup Menu > MIDI > Midi beat clock. In this drop down menu select the port that the MPC is connected to (MPC output port 1 - to Mbox In)

Pro Tools as Slave:

MPC settings - Go to MPC sync page - set up as follows:

Sync Out A (MASTER)
MIDI TIMECODE

Send MMC - On.

Pro Tools Settings:

Go To Setup Menu > Peripherals > Click on the Machine control Tab and put in the followin settings.

MMC (master) - tick the enable box and select whichever port your MPC is connected to in the drop down menu. ID = 1 Preroll 90 frames.

MMC Remote (slave) - tick enable and set ID = 127.

Thats the way I have used it - although I don't really use the second method - but this is the way I got it to work - Think I said in a previous post that you had to use MTC - but on further investigation of this you don't, it's all done with MMC (midi machine control) - thats the key.

Don't know if you are using a Mac or PC - Using a Mac here so I had to set up AMS (audio midi studio) in order to tell the computer itself what was physically connected to it MIDI wise - On a PC there is a similar application - can't remember what its called though.

hey i know im not dopetrax but i tried the mpc as slave and there wasnt even a hint of syncing.
i'll try it again later today when i'm back home and let you know.

This would be so useful instead of always having to chop to the front of the transient and grid everything up. <- esp. sucks when i have drum tracks that are shifted (-/+ 1,2,3 etc.) and when I track to pro tools the feel changes.

im having trouble with the 1000 and protools syncing up with the reguar OS.

does this way of syncing the mpc and protools only for jj os system? cuz there is no midi clock on the mpc 1000 or mmc. the sync page on mpc 1000 standard is midi out and midi in where you select the channels. m i missing something?
