Using digital output (s/pdif) from mpc1000 to mbox 2?

Ok, so I've read the manual, and I can't find any info for using the s/pdif out of my mpc1000 to the in s/pdif in my mbox2 (for life drumming from the pads in pro tools).... is this only achievable through the record function? Just curious if I totally missed it in the manual.... even downloaded the manual from akai, and did a ctrl+f search for digital out and spdif s/pdif and only found info about the inputs, and the fact that it has the output. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I use the S/pdif outs into my Mbox 2 all the time for tracking drum tracks into Pro Tools. Now, i don't use it for live drumming of pads - but as far as i'm aware the S/pdif outputs just mirror the outputs if the units main stereo outputs (not the assignable mix outs) - so if you play a sample from a pad through the main outputs - this should be played out of the S/pdif outs too.

Have you hooked it up and tried it? - not in front of my MPC right now - but give it a go, i'm sure it won't bite!

I have a 1000, and will have a 2000xl studio plus. When you do the spdif out to the mbox 2, does it send everything as seperate tracks, or as a main out? Im interested in finding the best interface for protools with an MPC. I'm thinking about getting the 002, its on sale for like 1500 brand new. thoughts?

Figured it out.... turns out I had to enable the s/pdif in protools to get the power light to show up in the mbox2.... volume isn't what I'd like (tried adjusting levels.... just doesn't feel that "warm").... but I'll figure it out.


Now to figure out how to hook up my axiom 25 so I can play bass/synth/piano lines from mpc/reason and tie it all together.... I'm used to dj'ing and being in a band, but have always loved electronic music, so midi and all this is new to me.... but it's coming along nicely so far.

Jessiah - I'd get a 002 if you can afford it - would be a lot easier to track beats out - S/pdif out from the 1000 is just like another stereo output - the 002 would offer more flexibility as it has more inputs into PT.

so am I dumb for getting the mbox2? Should I have held out for the digidesign digi 002?

your'e not dumb at all - i've got an Mbox 2 and i'm pretty happy with it - just that the 002 has more inputs and would make tracking that bit easier. But if you ain't got the money an Mbox 2 is not really that much different - the important thing is the software for me - Pro Tools is Pro Tools at the end of the day - the softwarew features of LE are the same across the board whichever interface you have
