corrupted hard drives

so I've got a 120 gig hard drive in my mpc, I've had it in there for a couple months. I probably have about 3 gigs or so of drums, beats, samples etc. with all the problems that other 1000 users have been having I'm just curious if anybody's had their hard drive corrupted and lost shit, which is something I'm a little nervous about since I haven't backed up yet.

also, what's the safest, most effective way to back up data from the hard drive, flash card or transfer to computer hard drive?

i havent lost anything. i back up my hard drive in the mp to an external through my computer. if you need to clean your current hd, move everything to the comp and format the drive in the mp.

also make sure you are running JJOS the latest...

I too am running a 120 gb... if I find a bigger one I may get it just to test the limitations of the MPC...

Forgot to mention. I have noticed that the MPC1000 runs a little warm... I recommend getting one of those laptop coolers to run underneath it.

HEAT will kill a HD... I am talking from experience...

the akai no-s 2.01 has data allocation bugs that will screw with your files if you overwrite data (DIRECTORY ERROR). likewise, 2.01 does not turn off the hard drive so it's constantly running. the jj os turns off the hard drive to save it and also doesn't corrupt your data.

ok, that explains why sometimes it takes a second to access data.

I think the biggest it can run is a 160, but will only take 130 of it, and then after you format it you lose like 5 gigs...pretty much a waste of money for having 10 extra don't you think? it's pretty much the reason I bought the 120, but I am really hoping that it will last me a long time. I mean the hard drive in my laptop is fine and I've never had data problems with it, and the mpc runs the exact same drive.

reading nym's post makes me feel a little reassured, I never knew that JJ's os turned off the hard drive like that, I wonder why akai never thought of that in the first place. I've been running JJ long before I got my hard drive though, so I wouldn't know about 2.1 saving problems.

120 will last you guys AGES. i have a 40 gig in there and it is barely filled up past 3 gigs

BTW supposedly the corruption can happen w/larger CF drives as well.
