fixing a headphone out?

hey what's up folks

this is a question about headphone outs...mine seems to be acting funny. i've been less than gentle with it and have accidently occasionally yanked it out (cord gets wrapped around my foot, i shift position, etc). i noticed that sometimes it acts funny and loses some part of the signal.

how does one go about fixing these things? it can't be difficult, i've been putting together a tv studio for my workstudy and working with jacks and plugs...is this something i could do myself?

Are you sure it's the MPC headphone jack and not the headphone plug/cord connection?

Have you tried different headphones?

It's been awhile since I looked at it (so I could be wrong) but I thought that jack was just a standard PC mount. Alot of cheap PC mount jacks are held in place by the connecting leads and nothing else. If you broke the leads, you'll probably have to replace the jack, but I don't recall if they used the tricky SMT-mount stuff on that part of the machine. If they did you'd probably have to replace jack circuit board unless you've got the fancy super-expensive SMT soldering setup.

yeah it looks like it's not the headphones...happens on 2 pairs...i bet i can repair this for under 5 bucks, no big deal

just check your solder connections on the board where the HJack mates up. Possibly with a DMM to check for opens. It sounds like a physical connection issue by what you have described.

if that is not it, look for physical damage. Hopefully your jack is not a proprietary one.

cool. worst comes to worst i'll just use a quarter/quarter to eighth inch jack and run it out the stereo outs to headphones.

mine does that if i use a crappy 1/4" to 1/8" adaptor.

some of them do not fit very tightly.

i have a dedicated adapter for my headphones because i was tired of one channel constantly fading out. This adapter fits VERY snug.

nym, all that's happened is the contacts inside the socket have bent back from all the tugging. simply look inside the socket (you may need an endoscope/snail-friend to aid you in this) and slightly tweak the contacts back together. doing this will shorten the life of the socket if you have to bend them a long way or do this frequently, but given the thing's crapping out on you anyways, what have you got to lose? worst comes to worst, i'm betting that's a generic connector in there, and you can get a replacement for pennies.
