Collecting Midi information from the mpc1000

I'm new to this whole midi thing. Is there a way to grab my sequence/track/song into software through midi? As far as i understand it midi will send triggers/notes/events/etc but what program should i use to record these? can i collect the whole song? samples, sequence and all? Thanks for answering my newbie questions
