Using pads for data entry?

Hey, I was just wondering how the workflow is, using the pads to name samples, edit, etc. I'm assuming it's like a shift-key thing(?) The other MPCs don't use the pads for data, right? Can you work as fast as the other MPCs?
One of the main reasons I want a 1k so much is that it seems like one can get to be super-fast at sampling/sequencing on the MPCs....

...yeah, I know that was a lot of questions/rambling....sorry...

I use the Data Wheel for data entry and find that now having had a month or so practice with it I am very fast, naming tracks, setting up BPMs etc is a piece of cake now. The only thing that slowed me down originally was not learning how to use the shift key properly (made trimming samples a goddang nightmare) but now I'm up to speed (literally).

Good deal....maybe someday I'll save up enough money to actually buy one, instead of jumping on this forum all the time...though I do loves me some forum action!
