I would like to record synth sounds from my Yamaha keyboard over drum sequences I've recorded on my MPC1000. I've read up on MIDI and it seems as if there is a pre-determined "bank" of sounds that I can transfer back and forth between devices, in other words, it seems very limited, or maybe I'm understanding MIDI wrong.

My goal is to be able to record synth tracks from the Yamaha as a track inside a drum sequence Ive already recorded. Is this going to require me to move my hardware into the PC room and connect both devices up to the PC and control everything thru software? Or can I leave the Yamaha and MPC in the studio and actually record synth lines as tracks on the MPC?

Synth audio to mixer. MPC audio to mixer.

Synth midi in/out to MPC midi in/out.

MPC set to send mtc/mmc whatever u choose.
Synth set to midi ext (slave).

Record your drums on mpc your normal way.
Record your Synth midi on a MIDI type track in your mpc. The actual synth audio is NOT recorded onto mpc, that audio is going to the mixer, the mpc will record the midi notes onto the mpc. so when you play it all back, the mpc will tell the synth what notes to play out but the audio will be going to the mixer, get it?

synth midi out to mpc midi in correct?

and, whats this part mean?

"MPC set to send mtc/mmc whatever u choose."

whats MTC/MMC?

Can ya recommend a decent mixer?

I was just looking at some Behringer's and didnt see anything about onboard storage, so where will the synth track and mpc drum track be recorded? Or is this where I am not understanding what MIDI can do?

What MIDI cables will I need to run into the mixer? I know I'll have to run stereo cables from the synth and mpc into the mixer but not sure about which MIDI's to run where, besides the synth into the mpc.

Also how do I record those midi notes to the mpc, so they are just cues to where to play the synth sounds, without the mpc actually recording the pre-determined sounds?
