Back up your HDD to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.11?? Y or N??

The Akai site suggests this in the 2.11 upgrade instructions.. is this necessary?

Has anyone skipped this step and successfully upgraded from 2.10 to 2.11?

i formatted my hard drive when i had 2.1 i went to 4.4x-5x something jj and never reformatted. I never had any problems.

Yes, it's strongly recommended.
