Bit Grunger

Now, I've used the search function on the forums and found little to no information on the "Bit Grunger" effect. Now I know that this is implemented in the MPC system, but can some one please explain it to me.

Is this the same as bit conversion on the JJ os, or is it different? I know that with the JJ os you can convert samples to 12 bit, or 8 bit, whatever... but is the bit grunger the same kind of thing, or not?

The Bit Grunger basically adds a desired (or sometimes undesired) distortion effect to your sample. Kinda makes it a lil dirty. The Bit Grunger is similar to the Bit Rate converter, but not as precise nor accurate. It kinda tries to immulate the effect. The Bit grunger has its place, but dont think you can use it and get the same effect as the bit converter in the JJ.
But it does give you a cool lil grungy effect. I like it!

Think of it like a distortion pedal for a electric guitar.

So to actually get that low bit or lo-fi effect it would be better to upgrade to the JJ os because of the ability to convert bit sample rates?

How does it sound after conversion? Still crispy with crunch, or pretty much the same - as in "it's not really going to make much of a difference"?

drums sound pretty grimey when I convert them down to 6 bits.

I'm just wondering - when I convert drum samples down to 12 or 8 bit on the computer, it just sounds like a terrible hissing kick or snare. Can anyone here post a short sample of the bit conversion and bit grunger, or can you lead me to somewhere where I can check it out?
