Neither, really. Generally a phrase sampler is something designed with the express purpose of playing back layered phrases or loops, which is exactly what a nice delay pedal does. You can continue layering loops to your heart's content or the memory limitations of the sampler.

A multisampler is one designed with the express purpose of easily gathering samples from a range of notes playable by an instrument, and with functions for mapping these notes across a standard keyboard. The MPCs can be USED as either phrase samplers or multisamplers, but they are designed with the playback of individual one-shot sounds in mind. They also allow primitive looping of notes, but wave editing is never on the scale of that available via Akai/Yamaha/E-mu/etc rack samplers or newer soft samplers.

Dunno that there's dictionary definitions of any of those points, but that's how I've come to view them.

so then, what type of sampler is the MPC1000? If I attached a keyboard controller to the MPC, will I be able to play that same sample across the range of the keys and the sample will play?

It seems to me that the MPC1000 is a phrase sampler that is real powerful.

You can, but its not automated - you'd have to assign each note manually. To be honest, if you need this type of function on a regualr basis, you need a fully fledged sampler - even a second hand S2000 would do the job. I believe an MPC4000 will also do this?

MPC 1000 is actually classified as a drum sampler, meant to sample drum hits but is capable of much much more... it's a sampling drum machine with a built in sequencer and editable effects...
