Ram Q's & Big Hard Drive Users

Ram would determine how many files and sounds you can have loaded up/ queued for current usage right? If one were to simply view the files (weather ram space was available or not) you could still view these files on whichever drive, CF or Hard Drive... right?

I have had a hard installed (I returned it) and a 2GIG Compact Flash card. The 2GIG CF card still has over half the space available. When im trying to view these files over half of them arent showing up, the library of wavs just stops. I have tried both hard drive and compact flash and had the same problem.

Justin @ akai said it may be some bent pins on the drive but I no troubles getting the 516MB card working properly and this happens on anything with a large amount of files on it, both hard drive and compact flash. So it would seem like it was a ram problem.

I was on JJ OS 3.07 but currently im trying out AKAI 2.11 (Since I was dealing with Akai peeps)

Down and out for 4 weeks now, no resolution from AKAI or my own troubleshooting, hope someone can help. Im about to stick this sucker in the closet or sell it and get an MPD24 Someone pleeeeeeease throw out some possibles. It really doesnt make sense to me.

Also, Autoload is turned off for internal and CF drives. If I have a card in when I start up it trys to load the entire thing.

I've been seeing this problem on the boards lately. Sounds like it's a bug with Akai's OS - see if you can view them all using JJ

So your saying only 512 entries (entries as in samples/ wavs?) will show up per file?

Ive tried making new files but everytime I do this.. weather its 2.11 Akai or JJ 3.07 it says "file already exists" no matter what I name it.

I separated everything into files on my Mac once everything was organized I transfered everything onto the hard drive on the MPC. I had alot of problems when loading programs, it couldn't find the samples in all these files I put in and was a pain to locate everything (JJ 3.07)

Oh I missed that one part. Currently everything is on one file, the root I guess just reading off the CF probably 1300 files on it (less than 1gig)

Pretty sure Lampdog just solved it then. I knew there were size limits to the FAT format but I never knew about the entry limits. So JJ OS would no doubt do the same thing

You need to start putting your programs in separate folders, not necessarily one per program, but some kind of organization. As long as you keep a .PGM file in the same folder as all of its samples, then there shouldn't be any loading issues. If you have lots of programs that share samples though, you will either need to put those in the same folder, or make duplicates of the samples.

Having all your files in the root folder is causing the problem

Daaaaaaaaaamn. Problem solved! Thanks guys. I didnt know that about FAT/16. Although... Every time I try to make a new file it says it already exists so im having issues with new files - it sits for days too, then when it comes up to name the new file... "file already exists"

Well I just reformatted everything and made files on the CF before hand, it seemed to work only this way. I then loaded sounds from my mac to the CF/MPC and it worked.

That makes sense. So 55 samples inside 1 folder, plus 100 samples inside folder number 2, would be 2 entries... and so on... fairly easy system once someone explains it

However, I had this problem before with files.

This is the ONLY reason I dont like using files, it could never figure out where things were. And I still dont know how to do it. This file system is makes me feel like my dad trying to learn how to use the internet. How horrible is that.

just put the program file in the same folder as the samples that it uses and you shouldn't have any trouble with the program finding the samples

Cool. Well at first I tried this:

Splitting up all of my sounds into 3 files and a file with my programs, my programs couldnt find the samples this way as I was yapping about before.

So I then re-formatted my CF Put all my samples and all my programs in the same file, because ... as you mentioned also.. .I know it works this way. I made a seperate file off the root file like Lamp' was saying hoping that would just show up as 1 entry... but I go into that file I made and its back to how it was before... programs work... yes, but FAT16 is only letting me view a portion of the files.

I have my MPC up for sale on here and Craigslist, someone just emailed me wanting to pay what Im asking. Id LOVE to figure this out before selling it, id wait but I need the bucks. I think im going MPD24, might get a 2500 (I hear the file system is the same) So I could just deal with it on there too... anyways... I really appreciate the help so far, a little more would rock.

BTW... I saw AESOP ROCK last night in SF...
