midi question...

so im just entering the world of midi...forgive im primitive. i hooked up a roland xp-10 to my 1000 and im trying to record from the xp onto to the mpc. when i tap the pads on my mpc i get a signal from the keyboard however when i tried to play the keyboard and record on the mpc nothing plays back? so what am i doing wrong?

cmon peoples ive searched on here through numerous pages and no solid answers?

to record the XP MIDI data -

MIDI OUT on the XP ---> MIDI IN on the MPC

go into the MIDI/SYNC page and make sure you've the MP setup to receive
MIDI data (can't remember this exactly and I'm at work right now... it should
be obvious, but if not, check your manual.)

press record, play the keys you want.

to play back the XP MIDI data -

MIDI OUT on the MPC -----> MIDI IN on the XP

make sure the MIDI/SYNC page settings are right for this too, might require
a little playing around.

Okay so let me get this strait...
I should only have one midi cord hooked up when I'm recording as well as when I'm trying to play back what I have recorded?

From my understanding in the manuels it said to have both cords connected.

nah you can have them both plugged in - i was just breaking it down for you.

i usually only have MPC OUT to synth in cos otherwise when you're playing
your synth, whatever sounds are assigned to the pads will be triggered by
the corresponding keys... unless you have it set to internal which you have
to remember to switch back when you want to record your MIDI part...

i just find it easier yanking cords out than menu surfing.
