no, not really. I mean - you could, but the RAM is limited to 128MB max, which only gives you about 12minutes of stereo time to be loaded at any given time (the samples must be in .wav format)

So, you could play maybe one or two songs, but the way that the MPC functions makes it far from ideal for this purpose. You'd probably be very disappointed with it if this is what you would like to do with it.

If pads are appealing to you for triggering your special effects and other sounds, then you'd probably be best off with a budget laptop and a MIDI pad controller (MPD16, MPD24, Trigger Finger, PadKontrol, etc.) as there is software, I'm sure, that would be much better suited to your needs.

I use mine as a live devices. I sequences drums and some other parts because i dont have a drummer

The RAM is the limiting factor? Bumping up the CF won't buy me anything, will it?

Sounds like it's not ieal for even the smaller theatrical cues I'd thought it might.

I figured there was a chance it wouldn't be right for what I'd hoped, but at $400, it looks like I can turn it on Ebay for a bit more.

sp404 holds much longer samples, can stream from cf card (1 gig? tons)
mpc1000 probably aint what you want.
you could do it with a laptop and a midi controller, probably easier.
