Has anyone replaced their CF reader? Stories? Tutorials?

I think I am going to have to replace my CF reader. I wish I could install an internal hard drive, but my OS version is too early so it's not an option. Is there anyone out there who has performed this operation, successfully or not, on their MPC 1000? How did you do it and what was involved?

why don't you update ur OS?????

From what I understand you can't update your OS without a card reader.

if your card reader is busted, get a hard drive installed, i believe the earlier akai os will see 2GB of the drive. This will allow you to install a later akai OS or the JJOS in order to see the rest of the drive.

I purchased a HDM10 and a Western Digital 120 GB EIDE hard drive and connected the MPC to my PC. My PC won't see anything on the MPC. It just says "Insert Disc."

This **** sucks.

So now getting a new card reader installed is my only option I presume.

Alright, so my PC now recognizes the hard drive. But I get this when I try to install JJOS:

MPC1000 BootBlock Ver:1.03
Boot on OS Update Mode
Total Memory size: 16MB
A compact Flash Card isn't inserted.
Please insert a CompactFlash Card.

Ugh!

When updating the OS from Akai to JJ, you definitely need a CF.
When updating from the JJ OS to any other versions of the JJ OS, the CF is not needed. You can use either the hard drive or the CF at that point.
Call VST when they're open and order that CF reader/headphone board.

I had the same thing happen to me. In my case, it turned out that the connector of the CF drive to the main board was loose. I was able to open up the MPC case, then detach and re-plug the connector (no soldering required). When I powered the MPC back up, the CF drive was working again.

Give it a try, it could be that you have a loose connector too.

I wish my memory wasnt so sketchy about this but I do know - my MPC came with no HD and a borked card reader...

I got the HD kit and connected to my PC... nothing. Rebooted both MPC and PC - WinXP saw the MPC as an external storage device and I updated to JJ 4.x

I cant remember the exact procedure but I do know that it is indeed possible - I was either on 1.x or Im almost sure 2.x Akai OS and I remember messing about with read from card/hd/usb to get the MPC and PC talking...

I guess I have to replace the card reader no matter what in order to access all of the hard drive since I am using an early OS. I can currently access 2Gb, which will be cool for the next few months...once I fill it up, I will replace the card reader. It's better than not being able to save at all!

So the JJOS upgrade isn't working but has anyone had any luck upgrading to an Akai OS without a card reader or is it the same issue?

jaz- Thanks for that tip. I think my card reader is genuinely f*cked- some of the pins appear to be missing. Do you know how much soldering is involved in replacing the board?

Oh, damn eBay MPCs... But I'd rather just fix it myself than go through all the trouble of sending it back and acquiring a new one to possibly have something similar happen again (this is the second time I have gotten a broken used MPC).

IIRC - mine only saw the first 2GB also...

Is it possible to put the OS from your PC onto the first 2GB? If so then when you upgrade (either JJ or Akai) and re-boot... the whole drive is accessable - no more 2GB limit!
