using an mpc 1000 with jj os 4.55

if i play something with the T.C. off, my hits never fall on an even numbered midi increment.

for example, if i play a live snare i don't want it to be on

01.02.00
01.04.00
02.02.00
02.04.00

i'd rather it be a variety of different timings.

with t.c. off, i always get

01.01.91
01.03.95
02.02.03
02.03.07

or something similar. basically, always odd numbered PPQ hits that are in multiples of four. it's like i have no resolution here. it's not possible to have it be 01.02.02 without shifting it? can i not have my performance accurately recorded?

help

thanks

quantize is off.

the problem is that it only hits on certain increments. 03 07 91 95 but never 00 02 04 01 etc.

'it' would actually be you. You are hitting on those pads aren't you? The MPC is only keeping track of when do you hit...

look, i'll admit it. my timing ain't a swiss watch over here. but when i try dozens of times the same experiment and it only comes up in increments of .04 (read 1.01.91, 1.01.95, 1.02.03, and 1.02.07) EVERY TIME, there has to be a more logical reason. am i to believe that i am incapable of hitting anything except those four times every time i hit a pad? never once do i get 1.01.92, 93, 94, or 1.02.00, 01, 02, 04, 05, or 06.

there's just too many other possibilities. yes, the mpc is keeping track of what i do, i just thought i had a 96 PPQ resolution with quantize off, not 1/4 of that.

ok, so i just loaded up an 808 kit and recorded a snare for two bars with t.c. off. here is what i got:

1.01.94
1.04.04
2.01.95
2.04.02

not sure about your situation, but the mpc1000 is definitely capable of accurately recording your performance. i know you said t.c. is off, but it really sounds like it is on. like poundapro said, even with stellar timing it would be difficult to land in odd increments ALL the time.

thanks for taking the time to try it. this is certainly driving me nuts. i will go for 16 bars and if it doesn't make sense i guess the only thing left to do is roll one up. (either that or update my OS.)

i use another sequencer/synth (future retro revolution) as the master clock. i do this because it also has a din sync out to get my 808 or 909 running in sync. with the mpc as the master clock, the problem went away. it isn't ideal to have to switch clocks but at least a temp solution.

i still think that the mpc should not lose the ability to have even numbered increments regardless of what the master clock is. for 32 bars, still no even hits. very odd. (bad pun sorry)

there you go, i think you just solved your problem. does the other synth have t.c./quantization? if so, is it on? i would say thats it or maybe it has a different ppq resolution or both.

well its a 16 step sequencer so it prob has a very limited resolution. thanks for inspiring me to troubleshoot till it was solved.

In playback, there is no reason that a midi sequencer's quantization settings should effect the quantization of a sequencer that is slaved to it. The slave gets the same midi clock signal regardless of what the master sequencer TC values are set to.

If yer talking about recording a quantized sequence from a slaved seq. that's different.

this may sound a little long winded but you gear freaks will feel me.

the revolution being analog and not rock solid, puts out a strange uneven tempo. i happen to like it because it makes shit a little loose. if i analyze the tempo in pro tools, shit is loose as a **** (to use professional jargon). this rings true for the 808 and 909 too and i love that they all slide around a little.

now why can't the mpc be the master? unfortunately i use both pieces as part of a live performance with some of my samples being loops at the "loose as a ****" tempo. if the mpc took over, shit would sound like me mixing records back in 97 (trainwreck city). if i started a whole new master/slave arrangement, i would have to swap midi cables during a live set. very uninspiring for people dancing to see me fiddle with cables.

here's a clip of the mpc and revo on stage w/ me:
