what are the main benefits by upgrading? Would i be able to store more then 20 songs or what?

thanks

never more than 20 songs (99 seqs) loaded into the MPCs RAM at one time. Adding more RAM only allows for larger samples sizes. You can always have more seqs & songs on the CF card, you just have to remove the ones in ram before loading in more.

(I'm looking for a soft-reset technique to quickly blow away everything in RAM, allowing for a new upload of an ALL file for live shows that have more than 20 songs).

getting rid of shit in the RAM is a pain in the asssssssssssssss.

Deleting all programs and then pressing Purge takes a while. The Purge operation, for some reason, is not as quick as simply going into trim mode, hitting window and hitting delete all takes no time at all. Same deal with all Progs, all tracks, all sequences. All painless!

Just figgered I'd add my bit.

i started a thread about this a while back. it is a pain to clear everything out without rebooting.

one possible solution-

i guess it's possible to keep an empty project, and just load it with "clear" to empty everything out quick

i havent tried it myself tho..

I believe increasing the ram also increases the processing speed overall, If anyone knows for sure feel free to call me out if I'm wrong on this...

I think you are wrong, cuz there is no memory swapping or anything like that. If you don't have enough ram, too bad, the MPC will not load another sample for ya. It will not remove the least frequently used sample to load a new one.
Also the space that is used for functionality, is predefined and reserved. So adding more RAM will not change anything from the point of view of the OS. (MPC is more inteligent then Windows, so the Windows theory doesn't apply here :D )

Peace!

so what advantage does upgrading the internal ram have over buying larger CF cards? (besides storing certain sounds/drum kits in the internal memory)

What I want to know is this: why is it worth paying the $100+ to uprgade the ram when you can get a larger CF card for less money?

Im new to MPCs so sorry if this is a dumb question, but any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

But what if I upgraded the CF card to 128? Would I be able to use the MPC the same way as if I upgraded the ram to 128?

Im trying to decide (on a tight budget) whether its worth upgrading the ram vs buying a bigger CF card

Thanks again for your help.

having 128MB RAM with a 32MB card isn't going to help much, unless you sample alot live and ditch the samples at the end of the show.

OTOH, having a 128MB CF card isn't going to help you get longer loops into the MPC either, only access to more samples when your on the road.

Honestly, akai probably won't ever drop the price on the 128MB upgrade. But CF cards will come down in price over time. So, in the long run, you can save a buck or two buying the RAM now, and holding off on the CF card until later. That's still true even if the RAM drops 10% once stocks get filled up...

It's such a shame Akai dropped the ball so hard on the upgrade. Not only is not readily available in stores, but you should be able to use generic ram not "akai only". Those greedy f#@$ers.

I got the impression that you were mixing up the uses of the RAM and the CF card a little here.

The RAM and the CF card perform different functions. The CF card is (kind of) like a hard drive on a PC, samples and MIDI data that you want to be able to access on the 1000 go there. When you load a sample or sequence, the 1000 reads it off the CF card and puts it into RAM. Increasing the RAM means being able to load more and longer samples to use at one time. Buying a bigger CF card means you'll have more stuff with you for the MPC to use.

You can get by with a surprisingly small amount of both. The maximum RAM on the 2000xl is 32mb.

thanks, thats what i was looking for. i just sat down with the 1000 (my first time using an mpc) and i see what you mean. i was assuming that the mpc could read the data from the CF on the fly.
i'll deal with this 16mb until i can find and afford to upgrade the ram.
thanks again, you were all helpfull...
