Hard Drive Vs. Compact Flash - The Peoples Verdict

Hello all, this topic is aimed at the newbies out there, (i'm one of 'em) who are in the process of getting their filthy paws on the coveted MPC1000.

Can we know what is best to have with in your 1K;

Hard Drive or Compact Flash Cards?

If we could hear whats good and whats bad about both formats please give us your insight.

P.S. this is for those of us who need time to scrape the cash for the hard drive lol!

Upgrading your hard drive is more important. Compact flash cards are just for storing stuff and perhaps for transfering files from the mpc to a computer. The hard drive is what you store stuff on that the mpc actually plays off of. Hope that makes sense and helps.

RAM is what the MP plays from, not hard drive.

when i bought my MP the card reader was busted and i spent months and
months waiting on flaky suckas to repair that damn thing.

soon after i learned that a hard drive could be added. the repair was largely
unnecessary (except for upgrading the primitive akai OS) i stuck a 20 gig in the
sucka and have never had to worry about space since.

in my mind the HD canes the CF big time.

it really depends on the type of stuff you do really. If you work through multiple mpc's then maybe the cf is perfect for you. But if you are based off one machine than maybe a hard drive. Personally I use a cf because the studio I go to has an mpc there already, so I just bring the card and continue the project or mix down. I'm in the works of getting a hard drive and just using the cf for the purpose I mentioned above because of space issues Im soon going to have. So hard drive for massive space or cf for using in different machines.... you make the call.

They are both great assets to have. The CF gives you the flexibilty to take your work on the road, but that is also limited to the amount of space avail on the CF, but if you only take what you need it should get the job done nicely. As stated above the CF is also the easiest way to udpate the OS...


The HD on the other hand gives you an immense amount of space to work with, therefore that should never be a problem. This way you do not have to load samples into the CF all the time since space is not a problem.


With the popularity of Ebay these days, niether venture will break the bank, therefore having both can be done without breaking the bank.

i'm buying my mpc1k next week, will i be able to save all my drum samples onto the hard drive in folders and have access to them easily?
i was thinkin of keeping all my samples on the hard drive and just the flash card for tranferring them from my computer.

or can the hard drive on the 1k be accessed directly from the computer via usb?

you can set the hard disk or memory card in the Midi/sync option... so both operate on a drag and drop slave option..

so basically.. yes...

Sorry but this thread is a waste. If you search all of this has been answered already. There are comparisons, reccomendations of what manufacturer to use and anything else you need to know.

i have searched the forum, its hard to get clear all round answers, i wouldn't have posted this thread if i was in the know.

also it was for new people who are getting an mpc

searching this whole forum for answers that arent there is what i call a waste of time.

Go to search and look up CF and HD's see many topics come up. Instead of covering new topics and discovering new ways to improve everyones production the same old topics come up every single day some "producer" wants an answer given to him without even researching it. So like I said this thread is a waste of time because this has all been covered before.

i told you this post was for people who are new to mpc music production and a buyin an mpc.

Right i was new but find a single post of mine where im going over the same sh!t that was covered a million times. The search feature is there for a reason man. I used it. My MPC didnt even come with a manual and i got my hands on one. Nobody wants to do the footwork. As a matter of fact right above this post are stickies on CF and HD's what more do you people want? Everybodys looking for an easy fix. All you see is the same posts. Hi im new i cant hear my midi, what is JJ, why wont my 4gb card work....I mean cmon seriously. Its not about the noobs its about all the lazy cats who thinks they are owed answers. I guarantee you, you can find every answer to every question regarding how to work an MPC from start to finish without ever repeating a single question. But because cats are too lazy to click to a previous page for an answer we get 4-5 posts in a row about the same thing. You'll see. Stick around a few months and watch how many time somebody asks a question that was answered a thousand times before. I like to read thru the forums for new ideas and resolutions to new issues not 5 noobs a day asking about something thats in the manual, in another topic, or in a stickie.

look man i hear ya, but i wasn't bein lazy. a forum is there for people to help each other out and share information. i have in no way abused it or done somethin wrong. if sumbody asks me a question, i either answer it or don't. i don't sweat anybody.

Look dont take it personal bro. Its not an attack on you. Everything i say is pluralized for a reason. When I first began production the FIRST thing i did was pick up an audio recording book. Why? 2 reasons. 1 there werent forums at the time and 2 i was serious about my craft so i decided to study and learn. If anyone is serious about wanting to do this then they should be expected to have some motivation and research their options as opposed to yelling out help at step 1. Again its not a personal attack. If it came off that way my bad but I do stand behind my previous statements. People really need to search the forums. There are a bunch of guys here with real good information. Information that would be valuable to those who truley need it. Seeing the same posts will not inspire anyone to want to help. In fact I think it would do the opposite.

but we got somethin in common, i've been producing for bout 3 years now and this is the first time ive been with a forum, ive been using a roland juno with cubase to produce hip hop, i never knew much bout mpcs, all i knew was i want one.
