Formatted CF....Am I doomed?

I just recently formatted my CompactFlash, trying to find a solution to my OS problem. I backed up everything though. It seems as though none of the pads respond..all factory files still appear to be there, just no sound...any help?

When I hit record, there's just a slight buzzing sound.

Ok. My pads worked perfectly up until the time I updated to v2.11. Now there's no sound at all, and when I press record there's buzzing.

You need to reload the OS again

Why is this? I mean, not that I'm doubting it, but.......Why is this?

If that is the case, then just load the JJOS this time......

1. Dont' use Akai operating systems unless you are a masochist and/or have a desire to corrupt saved data. You've been warned!

2. Use JJOS and perform the (ERASE/POWER ON) system reset after upgrading, then REFORMAT ALL DRIVES with the JJOS to cleanse away the rancid disease of Akai software once and for all.

3. Let us know if you have any problems after this, but if you do not perform the above steps, you are on your own. (oh except for Akai "tech support" goodie goodie..).

What does the Reset actually do? I have seen references to it a few times, but the word "Reset" always scares me.....

I am running JJOS 3.06 and never did the reset, but my setup seems to be working fine.....

System default reset is a standard function on just about any box of this type. It does exactly what it says -- restores the unit to a factory default state and clears all parameters stored in the machines' memory locations (no, not the drives). This is necessary because previous installs or the upgrade process itself can -- potentially -- leave behind artifacts that will screw up the workings of the new install. It really happens.

Responsible manufacturers will not only tell you how to perform a full reset in their standard user manuals, they will also specifically instruct you to do this after performing an OS upgrade. Akai, obviously, ain't that kind of company.

I have created a folder with all the sounds I have collected, on my CF card and I noticed that that particular folder always takes about 30 seconds for me to accesss it (Wait..... shows). Is this normal for a folder with about 500mb of data in it????????

Off hand I can't remember if I've personally run into that specific problem, but it doesn't surprise me since the MPC drive controller (as far as I know) runs completely in the PDA software with no dedicated hardware, so it's performance can't be compared to a traditional computer or really anything with a dedicated drive controller. This is likely a big reason why you can't stream directly off the drive while the MPC is in sequencer mode.

If it's not a limitation of the system, it could be fragmentation of the drive. You could back up, reformat then replace the files to see if it works any faster.
