"ILLEGAL GENERAL INSTRUCTION"

while using my 1000, the screen started to kinda blink, an fade at the same time, it then froze up and said "Illegal General Instruction"... does anyone know what the deal is with that?

I did a search on "Illegal and General and Instruction", and this is the only post that came up (others than this thread)........ Does your MPC have added memory?

Yeah it's a type of crash. If it's still doing it, try removing the memory and/or hard drive. There's also the possibility of an internal short somewhere.

Thanks for the help....heres what has been happening..

I do have a 256 Ram upgrade.. I took it out, and then back in and it worked fine for a while.. now there are other problems that are occuring.. The screen is always fading in and out, looking like its about to crash, which it hasnt since. My mpc keeps bugging out and basically playing every sample ive loaded over and over again without my having pressed any pads... When recording, it will only record the very first note played and then the recording cuts off. So when i play back an 8 bar sequence only note 1 is recorded and played back..

Could it be possible that with a different RAM card these problems wont occur? Something simple to fix?. Or is it something F'd with my mpc..

any feedback again, is greaty appreciated.

Clack, I am no expert, but it sounds as though you may be suffering from OS bugs.... What OS are you running? Akai OS or JJOS?


If you are using an Akai OS, try switching over to the JJOS (Free) for a while, and if the problems go away, and once you are comfortable you can always upgrade to the Newer JJOS......

I am new to this and the JJOS hass been just as easy to learn, they are pretty much the same, just a few added option/functions, but once your exp level goes up it will seem very basc.

I am using the Akai OS, and have been considering getting on the JJ OS because it seems to be a the better choice. I'll get the JJOS soon but would like to hear some more feedback on the problem just to get more understanding of the situation and learn how to possibly fix it. Thanks shwell for writing back.

The Akai OS has bugs that may not be fixable. I was having the problem and would have to keep at it until it worked.... Then I installed the free version of the JJOS and gave it a try... Once I switched over I doubt I will ever fo back. It not only eliminates the bugs, it also gives you a few more options with the MPC.... The updated (pay) versions are appearantly even better, but I am holding off until I have a comfortable grasp of the 3.08 version.


The only reason I keep going here is that once you figure out the problem, it will just lead you to the OS being responsible and you will go to the JJ side in the end. MY recommendation is based personal exp with the same problem you describe....

go with the jj os and see how that works out.

but i don't know if that will fix it, it could be the actual ram you've installed, not all ram modules work in the mpc1000.

Since this is kinda on subject.... IF a person is using the newer JJOS and they install memory and it gives problems like this, what would/could be the problem????? I am asking for a fellow noob....... I am stumped....

Sounds like more of a hardware problem. The usual -- loose or broken internal connections, shorts from metal parts like loose screws that shouldn't be touching anything etc.

Same type of thing happened to me (sorta). Most of the time if there is a problem with the hardware (in my case it was the ADDA board) it will just default to saying "illegal" this or a memory problem with that....

It wont ever really tell you exactly the issue...kinda like a "check engine" light on a car....
