Help... MPC 2000xl lover going MPC1k?

Read the Faq on switching from 2000xl to 1k. . . Lurked on the forums. Getting a decent price for the 1k so I might even earn some money on selling my mpc2000xl and make the switch.

I would like to adress specfically those aquainted with making this same switch (I know some of you are while most - hopefully -are too busy making music to come to the computer).

Oh right, using the mpc1000 I'm thinking you _are_ actually by your computers all day.

First off, I rather dislike working with computers. Imagine that while some of you are complaining about the lack of sync options other than midi.. my setup (tho very small) is actually dependant on CV/gate-sync! that said, forward thinking and computer editing hasn't really been my way of music making, but since I got a really good 2.8GHz lappy with 17" I'm kinda readying myself to change that.

During the four years that I have been making music I have not sat down with an effects rack to finalize more than one track, which went on to vinyl. I just got myself a tascam 388 mixer with internal 1/4" tape, meters and the whole nine.. . I have a nutty analogue knob hell-like synth with doeppfer midi/cv synch.

I think I am going to love the 1k's filters. The feedback I'm having from people using resample an bit grunger has been dissappointing though.. Having some studio experience with a sp-1200 I am very picky about the quality of "bit grunge" you get from the machinery.

As for now, I am probably going into this 1k thing after all. I am pretty comfortable with the usb thing since I have been using it for memory sticks, mp3 players and cameras for ages. Is it usb 2.0 btw?

As bland as it sounds, I am probably going to miss the timestretch thing. I e-mailed Akai specifically about any plans or possibilities on implementing this in the 1k. I know sound editing can be done on pc (is sound forge no longer the way to go? no one here seems to use it) but the timestretch on the mpc2000xl had a bpm match thing to boot so you wouldn't have to get a pen and a pad to get the loops proper length.

Also, looking at the specs of the 1k, how come I see it sell cheaper than a 2kXL? This one question is really bugging/worrying me in some stupid way. frankly I haven't seen that many drawbacks on the mpc1k that weren't much compensated for in sheer size, filters, connectivity etc... Someone please school me.

the 1000 is a nice machine to be sure but you should hear one, make sure its sound will work for you... I think they sound really different, others can't hear any difference...

I hate the physical layout of the MPC1000 which I think is fiddly but its OS is infinitely easier to deal with, filters and fx generally much more useful - master FX handy. Editing is limited but quick. USB/Compact Flash/more RAM is just a DREAM compared with all that zip/floppy/32meg rubbish... and its cheaper simply because everything is cheaper...

but the MPC100 is not perfect: the Q link thing is nice but could be FAR more fully implementated. You may need more outputs for studio use. And the MPC1000 is not exactly loaded with innovative new ideas: lack of BPM syncable filters/lfo/delay and q link sliders that asscociate with anything in truly realtime would be nice... the fact that you can't change the volume of individual parts in realtime is fukking crazy and suggests that some people at Akai are morons - or at least have never actually put a tune together with an MPC... mixer could be much easier to use (a "select all" option is 100% needed)

Ultimatley I much prefer using the 2000 to program beats - its size, its sound and its layout suit me a lot, the drum features, being able to change a whole kit in one go in real time, changing part volumes in real time are things I an unhappy without. But in comparison with the 1000 it is really PRIMITIVE and I would not hesitate to point most users towards the 1000, it is so much easier putting kits together and doing interesting stuff with the pads and filters, combining samples etc, I probably won't buy a PC type editor for the MPC1000 because I don't think I really need one - whereas i HATED building kits on the MPC2000 and depended on Mike Goins PC app to put kits together....

BTW I meant everything is cheaper these days, not that the MPC1000 feels or sounds cheaper than the MPC2000

the 1k is literally a laptop device - its very compact and portable - i can sit in my kitchen in my rocking chair and make beats, it doesn't have to stay in the studio.
