A HEAD SCRATCHER!!!

Whats up everyone? Ok heres the deal. When you hook up a midi keyboard (casio 3500 example). You can play sounds from the casio and record the data to the MPC1000.
Here is my problem..... I want to use my Akai MPK49 (USB to PC), to play sounds in sampletank2. But I want to record the midi info using the sequencer on the MPC1000. My MIDI interface is the cakewalk power studio 250(1 MIDI in and 1 MIDI out). I have the MIDI cables from the interface going to the MPC. (hooked up the same as mentioned above with the casio). Why is this not working?

Ok, so you have an mpc 1000, the midi keyboard, and sampletank is a plugin for cakewalk, right? Does the keyboard have a standard midi out? If so maybe you could send the keyboard straight to the midi in on the mpc, and the use the midi through on the mpc to fire your plugin.

I realized that I can do this, but I have a setup where I have a midi thru box that has 2 ins and 8 outs, so when I send midi data from a keyboard the mpc gets it as well as my daw.

If you're keyboard only has a usb/midi out, there may be another way, but I can't think of it off the top of my head. If I'm misunderstanding your situation completely let me know.

The MPK49 has a usb which I'm using. A midi in and a midi out. When I try your method what is considered the midi through on the MPC. Do I hook that up to the midi in on the interface(I would asume)

I can play the sounds on the MPK49 and on the mpc at the same time. I can record the sounds that I play on the pads. But the MPC will not record the info played on the MPK49. This is not making any sense what so ever.

I just tested it and it works. I ran midi out from my keyboard into the midi in on the mpc, midi out of the mpc to the daw, then I opened the manual to page 53 where it told me how to use the soft-thru function.

You need to describe exactly how you have things setup, ins to outs etc. I have an mpc 2500 but it should the same for you (I looked and the soft thru function is on page 46 of the 1000's manual). It's working for me, you just need to carefully step through your chain.

I just hooked it up just like the manual with my casio, playing the sampletank sounds through it and it will record on the MPC "SWEET" but I now need to figure out why the MPK49 won't allow this to happen. Thanks for all your help by the way much appreciated.

you need the ac adapter to record on the mpc it wont do it through the usb that sucks come on akai.

J4F, it's not working because the MIDI info from the keyboard is going straight to the computer. You need to slip the mpc in between the keyboard and the computer. This will enable the mpc to 'hear' the MIDI info, record it, then pass it on to the computer, so it can play the plugin.

to do this you need to go from the MPK's MIDI out to the MPC's MIDI in, then from the MPC's MIDI out to the computer's MIDI interface's MIDI in.

As pimp c says, you may need a separate power supply to do this, as if you connect the MPK to usb for power it'll automatically send the MIDI info down the USB cable and not to the MIDI ports (though, if you're lucky, it may be configurable to do just that).

I talked to the people at AKAI. You guys are right. You can only do this with a power adapter. The USB will not allow this to happen. Bad design! Thanks for all your help.
